I was told that when these locomotives first went into service, Baldwin had to send a troubleshooter out because the railroad complained that the engines wouldn't run. Investigation revealed that the firemen were filling the boilers completely full, so that there was no steam space left.

These engines had other quirks, too. For instance, "I was told" that every washout plug was a different size and thread count. Guess that way, you couldn't get them mixed up....

I wish I'd been there and seen it, but at least nobody can blame me (or am I speaking to soon) because the engine was hauled off to Arizona. ARIZONA ??? That's just plain wrong.

The story I was told was that it had to leave the RR as it was rebuilt top to bottom, and Broadmoor is controlled by the same company that runs Xanterra and by extension the Grand Canyon Railway.........

I was told that the order came from someone above the GCRY, and it was a case of "when the boss yells 'JUMP!' you ask 'how high?'"

At least they kept ownership of it, because the trains they clearly did not want went to Golden.

I think it is the start of the cog line they are building from the bottom of the canyon up to the top.

Honestly, I don't know.

I will say, from personal introductions to certain individuals, that the gentleman to which you imply is far from the only "rail enthusiast" in the broader company. As in, folks copping cab rides or PV rides on a railroad that doesn't even offer cab rides to friends or clients of the company.......

Nuff said. Really.

Only thing I might add is that it's a feather in Mr Ramsey's cap that he fired #4, and another because he lived through it. Really.
