I wonder if Roaring Camp could use a diesel for use during a drout?

A bit too big for the Isle of Man as well............

The last thing Isle of Man needs is another flawed, truck-engine powered diesel from a defunct, short-lived manufacturer.

I haven't seen any mention of these on the narrow gauge forum, but D&S has already also learned the lesson of the aforementioned flawed, truck-engine powered diesel from a defunct, short-lived manufacturer.

Buy a pair if you get one. We always ran them as 91/97, 92/93, 94/99, 95/96, 90/98. Those combinations seemed to work together best. I probably ran 92/93 most out of all of them.

That last bit is pure speculation on my part on why she got scrapped and why they've now replaced this fleet. But common sense says they're not replacing a fleet that on average is only 10 years old (Mechanically and electrically these were brand new locomotives after being rebuilt) unless they ended up extremely disappointing after a few years of service.
No, that's not it.

The WP&Y's new 3000 horsepower locomotives can individually pull the same length trains that previously needed 2 or 3 of the older 1200 and 1450 horsepower locomotives. The new locomotives are letting WP&Y cut their road fleet size in half - they bought 6 new NREs to replace 12 of their old engines. Four of the old locomotives were already sold to the D&SNG and now eight more are for sale.

Thanks, Chris.

I've edited my post with a link to your information, on the off chance someone reads my post but doesn't make it to the end of the thread to find out the actual reason for their replacement.

I wouldn't want what I presented as speculation to inadvertently spread, now that someone in the know has explained the actual story behind their replacement.

Do you think they might hold on to 2 or 3 of these for special excursions, given their importance to the history of their line? I believe the plan when the NRE's were first announced was that at least one was going to be retained, but that was quite a while ago now.

Thinking back to the original Trains article in 2019, I believe it was stated two of each would be held onto.

The NRE's are DC motors right? Interesting choice vs using AC, seems most modern power including passenger has made the switch to AC based motors.

Are there any ac traction motors that will fit into a 3 foot gauge wheelset? 764s have been the go to for 3 foot gauge for a long time, and I don't think any builders have invested in this oddball market for a long time

I don't believe that there is that much demand for three foot gauge modern power. Meter gauge there is some, but I haven't checked to see if any of the recent meter gauge locomotives were AC or not.
