The discussion here led me to once again open my favorite L&RP issue, the very last one that ends on a high note with the article on the then "World's Most Active Advocate," and search for the mission statement of the magazine of which this forum is said to be a continuation of. I found this:

"Locomotive and Railway Preservation has become the most effective archive of railway heritage and preservation activities we have. The magazine helps give tangible form to the scattered efforts of thousands of men and women throughout the continent." - John Hankey, Contributing Editor, issue 63 page 16.

A more fitting post of such an activity could not be made.
