I know of two in Cleveland owned by the successor to the Midwest Railway Historical Foundation (MRHF), formerly the equipment owing arm of Midwest Chapter, NRHS (also the owners of ex-GTW Mike 4070 and NKP heavyweight coaches 62 and 90). They are now completely separate from the NRHS chapter, and I think it's now called something like Midwest Railway Preservation Society. Anyway, they have two heavyweight Pullmans: Mt. Baxter, also renamed for founding member, and late W&LE engineer John S. Foster, from the early '60's to around 1980; and Ft. Eustis. Both cars were regularly used in the consist for the Cuyahoga Valley Line in the early years. I think the Baxter is a 16 section/buffet/lounge - with a windowed and non-vestibuled lounge end, and the Ft. Eustis is something like a 6 section/2DR/4DBR. I believe there is at least one sister Mount series car around (I was told in the '70's that it was owned by the Atlanta Chapter, NRHS). The Ft. Eustis may be the only survivor of its series. It was mostly used on the C&O, as you might suspect from the name. Both cars are stored outdoors, need major work, and I don't think either currently meets interchange standards.

The Times Square is now in Dennison, Oh., moved by Truck from ORM. As of Jan 2009, it was in pretty rough shape. End doors were open, several windows were missing. It was sitting on it's trucks, but all rigging and draft gear was either missing or sitting on the ground near the car.

I believe the Whittier is still in Worthington.

From the Galveston Railroad Museum of Galveston, Texas.....

WOODLAND- "Woodland" was built to Pullman Plan 3410B and was 1 of 12 cars in Lot 6360, all built for UP. This 87-ton car was delivered on 21 April 1930 by Pullman and is one of the last Pullman "standard" all-steel sleeping cars built. Pullman built more of this class of sleeping car than any other. A mechanical air conditioning system was applied to the car in the mid 1930's. This car ran on the Union Pacific's Portland Limited between Chicago, IL, and Portland, OR, until sold to the Illinois Central where it ran on the Panama Limited between New Orleans and Chicago. The car was sold for scrap in Oct 1965 and was purchased by the Oregon Pacific & Eastern Ry.

GLEN FEE- Pullman built almost 100 cars in the "Glen" series between 1923 and 1929. "Glen Fee" is one of 26 cars built to Plan 3523A, lot 4970, and bears the unique car code 2789. The "Glen Fee" was delivered on 27 July 1926 and operated on the New York Central's 20th Century Limited until about 1963. After passing through a series of owners, it was sold in 1965 to the Oregon, Pacific & Eastern. The "Glen Fee" also served on the original American Freedom Train in the 1940's and is claimed to be the last known surviving car.

MOUNT DARWIN- "Robert E. Lee" (formerly the "Mt. Darwin") (ex-Railroad Town, USA, exx-Bear Creek Scenic Railway, exxx-Private Railway Cars, Inc.) sleeping/lounge car. This 86-ton steel car was built in 1924 by Pullman, one of 90 such cars. All 10 cars built using this floor plan (Plan 3521, Lot 4816) were built for general service. In the 1930's the car was equipped with a mechanical air conditioner for the comfort of its passengers. It is known to have operated on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy's Exposition Flyer between Chicago and San Francisco in the 1940s. It was dropped from service by 1961 and sold by Pullman in 1965. The car was named "Robert E. Lee" for use in a film; it never ran on the Southern Railway which did have a car named the "Robert E. Lee" but which had an entirely different interior configuration.

I am not sure of the current condition of these three. GRM was hit REALLY hard by Hurrican Ike. The water level in the yard reached 8 feet! Salt water.....use your imagination and hope for the best. They were in decent display condition before.

VERDE VALLEY- AT&SF Pullman Verde Valley is one of 26 identical sleeping cars delivered to the railroad by Pullman Standard in early 1942. These cars, with three different bedroom types, saw service on many Santa Fe sleeping car routes.
Three of the 26 Valley series sleepers originally were assigned to Chicago-Kansas City-Tulsa service, while the remaining cars were assigned to the Chicago-Texas-California California Limited, although the cars could be found in other consists, notably the famous Chief, as well. After World War II, the Verde Valley ran regularly in Santa Fe’s Temple, Texas, to California service, originally named the Texan westbound and California Special eastbound, with the California through cars connecting with Santa Fe Chicago to California trains in Clovis, New Mexico. The service was extended from Temple to Houston in 1948, and after this the Verde Valley was found regularly at Houston Union Station. In 1954, the Texan name was dropped and the train was known in both directions as the California Special until Santa Fe discontinued the service in 1968. Santa Fe donated the car to the Gulf Coast Railroad Museum in 1969. Facilities in the car, which is called a “6-6-4”, include six open sections with upper and lower berths; six roomettes (sleeping one person each); and four double bedrooms (for two persons each). Bedrooms and roomettes feature sinks and toilets; section passengers had access to four general lavatories.

14 Berth Pullman James Watt (not related to the former Interior Secretary) survives today with eleven of its berths in place.

Althought the CPR was not Pullman; you should visit the huge web site of the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel in Cranbrook, BC Canada.

They have restored whole trains of wood and steel cars. At last count they have something like 42 cars on display.

Two of them were restored after service as lakeside summer cabins in Wisconsin.

Southern California Chapter, Railway and Locomotive Historical Society has former NKP 6 business car, previously one of "Club" series car. Car ran on NKP 9-10 between Cleveland and St. Louis. Originally 10 section, now 9 sections (boiler installed where section was located), buffet solarium lounge car. Used by Palos Verdes Railroad Club in the 60's, then sold to Warmington Company in Orange County, CA for use as a real estate office. More information at our website: railgiants.org.

The Northwest Railway Museum in Snoqualmie, WA has Great Northern Baggage car #485 which was originally built by Pullman in 1921, Lot 4624, Plan 2411C, as Pullman Co. Sleeping Car EPICURUS. In September 1941 the car was changed to Pullman Tourist Sleeping Car #1056. In March 1948 GN acquired TS #1056 and in December 1948 after conversion work the car emerged as GN Baggage Car #485.

Not quite true Ted. The CPR did purchase some Pullman Sleepers from the New York Central in the late '50's. The New York Central's "Cascade Lane" became the CPR's "Brookdale" until retired in 1968. It survives today and partially restored back to NYC at the Elgin County Railway Museum in St. Thomas, Ontario.

Any word on what happened to Glen Blair, a 6&3 which was intact for years at Brunswick, Md. car shops? I don't think it was scrapped in place, I think it may have been moved prior to that area being cleaned out, but I don't really know for sure.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to compile and type out these lists. I see you are from Seattle so must drink a lot of their coffee in order to stay awake while you are working on such an effort as this.

Secondly, a bit of clarification on Great Spirit. Yes, she was eventually donated to the Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society and moved to the Indiana Railway Museum in French Lick, Indiana. And yes, the President of the MRHTS wanted to rename her as the Monon to honor the railroad. However, it was put to a vote of the MRHTS membership and we decided in favor of Lynne and that is the name she is now (again) known by. She carried the name Lynne when in service on the Monon until she was eventually renumbered simply as number 2.

A note that two cars listed at Central Pa. Chapter NRHS at White Deer, Pa. have been sold to the West Va. Central and are awaiting shipment by truck (or whatever) from Pennsylvania to West Va.; I believe the two are Horatio and McClellandville, but await confirmation and movement before updating.
