Does anyone know what locomotive this was? Some parts of the film were made in western Canada, but by 1965 no steam was regularly active there. The engine appears to be a 4-6-2, but it's so covered up it's hard to tell. It doesn't look like a doctored-up CP engine -- the tender, in particular, doesn't look North American.

The Strelnekov train scene was filmed in Spain, and the engine is a standard RENFE 2-8-2 which was "highly modified" for the movie.

Thanks, that clears up the question about that "steampunk" model.

That is so "cool" (to use a non-steampunk term). I plan to share it with my fiction authors group.

Speaking steam-punk, the youtube cooking show "epicmealtime" (which uses large amounts of bacon, fast food, and Jack Daniel's as staples for their recipes) recently did an episode based around steam-punk cooking styles (it also involved some zombies, vampires and a werewolf, but who's counting?). I'll post the link later, as I don't have enough time during my lunch break to find it.

I'm totally opposed to using Jack Daniels in any recipe... It's a waste of good likker.

Say, didn't this thread start with Mark Jordan reporting that he was going to display a traction engine at a Steampunk event? That should have passed by now. How did it go? Was anyone interested, or just disappointed 'cause it didn't fly?

Stumbled upon this tonight. Though further OT, it is fitting for this thread.

Enjoy!

I intend to test these waters this coming September.

Nearby is a Reniassance Fair village. I was there for the fair a few weeks ago. There will be a steampunk event on a Saturday, primarily a music/band event. The same folks that do the RenFair stuff also dress as steampunk, plus some other hardcore steampunk folks.

I approached my buddy that lives just a few miles away that has a selection of traction engines. I then approached the management of the RenFair/Steampunk event, and asked about the possiblity of having a real, live steam engine present. After some "you can do that?" looks, we agreed that it is a good idea. We will present the engine nearby the main activites/stage, and simply "turn a flywheel".

I don't know what to expect. Maybe nobody will pay attention to us. Maybe we'll get casual curiosity seekers. Maybe we'll get some really interested folks. I'm guessing that most of the "steampunks" have never had an opportunity to get up close and personal with a real, hot, smokey, smelly, steam engine. We will encourage and answer questions.

I guess we'll find out? Stay tuned...........

About 100-125 "steampunkers" attended. Age range 20-60 years old, and a 50/50 split of men and women. Attire ranged from "really, really nice" to "I'll throw something together".

About 50% didn't care about the steam engine at all. About 35% took interest, took photos, and asked questions. About 15% really asked detailed questions and showed real interest.

Of those that took marginal and real interest, several had never seen an operating steam engine of any kind before, and those that had stated that they had never been able to get close enough to smell the valve oil and feel the heat.

In true style, my camera batteries died, and my backup set were dead in the package (don't buy from the Dollar Store!). Sorry I didn't get more photos.

There was a Steampunk event at Historic Speedwell in Morristown, NJ (not far from the Whippany Railway Museum) over the weekend.

Here is a link to a short article, slide show and video:
