"Bottom line, I believe the only one officially preserved . . ."

And therein the dilemma. There is a mindset in the preservation community that unless an artifact is in the collection of a non-profit, it is not preserved. I would argue that any artifact that any one has gone to the time, trouble, and expense to return to its original appearance is not only restored but preserved.

I don't speak for them but IRM has a C&NW SD40-2, WC (BN) SD45, BN U30C, and CB&Q SD24 in running order.

Other C-C's would include the ATSF FP45 (non operational), a GB&W (ATSF) RSD-15 (status not sure), and MN&S Baldwin centercab which has run in recent years but I think needs some work currently.

I can't recall what else. As the question was actually about 6-axles, for A1A-A1A's, besides various E units there's a C&G Baldwin AS-416.

News to me. Can anyone confirm or clarify?

Yes. NS 3170 & 1580 are both sitting in Juniata right now. 3170 was the first Southern SD40 and the 1580 is the first N&W SD40. They are the last SD40s there, All others have been sold or scrapped. 3170 has a D/S on the side (for Do Not Scrap I presume?) and both were placed into scrap trains destined for Cresson Scrap & Steel before being pulled out and back into the shops. I see no reason for NS to keep the two around unless they are being withheld for historical reasons. (NS 1580 was one of the last straight SD40s to be retired as well, in 2010.)

I don't think it is pure coincidence the only two SD40s left at Juniata are 3170 and 1580 respectively. I posted a topic back in February about the two but it did not recive any replies. I don't want to clog this topic with details about the two so please post anything further on this thread:

I can't believe there are still people telling Doyle what to do with HIS locomotive that he's put his own blood, sweat, tears, and money into. I'd love to see a PA in ATSF warbonnet as much as the next person, there are a number of locomotives in ATSF red/silver warbonnet, both preserved and in service, for people to enjoy. To my knowledge, "NKP 190" is the ONLY passenger cab unit preserved in NKP "bluebird" colors.

I remember an initial conversation about 12 years ago on some board in which someone quoted Doyle as saying one of the factors in him restoring his PA as NKP 190 (besides "I want to and it's mine) was the prohibitive cost of replacing all the stainless-steel side panels which were long gone by the time he got it.

The main reason I always heard was that his father was an engineer for the Nickel Plate and the original 190 was the first engine Doyle got a cab ride in.

As for whether it should be in the Bluebird or the Warbonnet, being a budding historian, I'm all about historic accuracy, but at the same, I believe that there should be variety in what is preserved and displayed. If people want to see an ATSF Warbonnet PA, tell them to donate to the Museum of the American Railroad.

(On a personal note, I like it in the NKP Bluebird because I keep hoping that, when it's done, he'll bring it back east and run it with the ELDCPS's City of Lima hahaha)

"News to me. Can anyone confirm or clarify"?

Norfolk Southern has NOT had two straight SD40s offered up for preservation for almost a year. N&W 1580 31899 5707-1 05/66 and Southern 3170 37355 7308-1 04/71 were set aside for preservation by two non-profits.

". . . and I haven't heard of anyone even attempting . . ."

Well, now you have.

Dept. of Miscellany:

  • The "D/S" stenciled on the fuel tank of retired NS units refers to the fact that the fuel tank has been drained and steamed out.
  • Striegel Supply purchased a number of retired FM units (including one EL TrainMaster) for resale.
  • Any number of Alco PA's were traded back to Alco on what they called 'replacement locomotives.' Ex: 15 PRR PA's went in on an order of DL-640's, 10 NKP units went in on DL701XA's...and at least some of the first order of LIRR C-420's were built against PA trade-ins.
  • A PA could also be a suitable trade-in for a U25B.

wm303, Do you have the names of the two nonprofits? I would like to come in contact with them regarding the two locomotives and the funding required to move them.

It may be noteworthy that the gentleman "with the train in the basement" who also runs a model railroad manufacturing firm is also a believer in preservation, and has helped back the preservation of a VIA LRC locomotive. Talk about modern power preservation!

cood101,

While I have no inside information, my instincts tell me they are probably going to Roanoke and Spencer. Don't worry about funds to move them; when NS donates, they deliver.

They will be nice to see in Blue and tuxedo black.

Glad to hear an LRC loco was saved. I had a chance to see them in action when they were new and running to Windsor in the early '80's. It was a real contrast with Amtrak F40's, which sounded like a screaming banshee coming into a station in full HEP mode, that this sleek, low, modern passenger locomotive gurgled like an old Ford missing on one cylinder with it's 251 prime mover, when you were up close to it.
