The former substation of the Washington and Great Falls Electric Railway survives near Bethesda, Maryland as a private residence. Railway service was short lived from 1913-1921, and the building has been in use as a residence since 1928.

I just remembered another Los Angeles area sub that was neither PE nor LARy--the Glendale & Montrose sub in Montrose. Passenger service was abandoned in 1929, but electric freight service with motor 22 lasted until about 1940, being operated by Union Pacific. When I looked for the building about three years ago, it was still in use as a residence.
I just looked at the area using Google map and I guess the building is still there incorporated into a house. Does not look like any new construction in the immediate area. I have to admit that I have never driven by the location.

Also interesting to note that Google map shows the former car barn still in use at the lumber company a couple of blocks away.

Here's the Glendale & Montrose sub, as seen in 2008. Thanks for the update, Brian, things can change quickly here in the LA area. The round attic vent in the substation building/house is a "spotting feature".

I'm also including a photo of the carbarn/lumber yard building. First time I visited there, one of the workers told me, "You should have been here a few weeks ago. We pulled out some of the old rails." Note that the building used to have arched doorways for the tracks, so it doesn't look much like it did in the 1920s.

Bob -

Thanks for the photos. That is really one neat looking little house! Almost makes you wish you lived there! It's railroad structure origin makes it even more attractive, especially the operators bay window.

Two Northern Ohio Traction and Light structures of note still survive in NE Ohio. In the NW corner of Ohio State Routes 8 and 82 in Macedonia stands the combination passenger/power substation for the NOT&L, now, I believe, a law office. The Southbound lanes of Rt. 8 in this area are built on the NOT&L RoW.

Second, in downtown Akron still stands the former NOT&L office building and train shed, later the local offices for Ohio Edison (now part of First Energy, the culprits in the great East Coast blackout of about 10 years ago) and currently the offices of the Summit County Welfare Dept. The train shed now serves as covered parking for employees. It's just up the hill from the Akron Northside station of the CVSR. There are still manhole covers on the sidewalks around the building cast with NOT&L and NOL&P in them.

There are a number of standing ones in the Rochester, NY area. Rochester & Sodus Bay, Rochester & Eastern and the Rochester, Syracuse & Eastern come to mind. A R&E one has been added onto and is a bar/restaurant in Pittsford, NY. Some of the other ones still stand largely unmodified. There is a R&SB in Ontario, NY; and RS&E's in East Rochester and Macedon.

I'm positive I'm forgetting some.

The Annapolis substation for the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad is now used as meeting space for the Loewe's Hotel.

Powerhouse Brewery, Puyallup, WA

Prewpub housed in a former Puget Sound Electric Substation.

Also, I'm not sure if it's visible from inside, but the BNSF mainline is adjacent to the building.

In reading this interesting thread I came away from it being impressed with just how substantially built these buildings were ( are) as well as how many have been readapted to new uses as a result. Another observation is how under-reported this interurban segment of the railroad industry is, specifically in terms of it's buildings, stations substations etc that are still extant or re-purposed. A further education from these posts is one I really appreciated. The photos of many were a revelation.
Its interesting in relation to the whole of the historic fabric of railroading just how much those of us in the choir focus on motive power when there are so many other aspects to explore and learn..even at my somewhat advanced age. Whats the old saying?..the works of man live beyond them.

The former substation of the Western New York and Pennsylvania at Ceres, NY still stands, but is in serious decline. It was severely damaged by a hit and subsequent fire from a tractor trailer about ten years ago. It had been used for many years as a roller skating rink, which I visited several times in my younger years.

One former substation of the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee is still in use on the yellow line, former Skokie Swift, of the Chicago Transit Authority. It is located to the east of the tracks and south of the Niles Center Road crossing, close to the far end of the line. This substation was out of service from the January 1963 abandonment of the line until its repair for use by the Swift early in 1964, during which time it had no heat to protect its equipment. I'm not sure this substation falls within the limits of this listing. Another complication is that it was first used not by the North Shore Line but by the Chicago Rapid Transit Co, the predecessor of the CTA, which started the service on the line as far as Skokie (then called Niles Center) in 1925 while the rest of the Skokie Valley Route was under construction. North Shore Line service began in 1926.

Just West of downtown Coopersville, Mi is a powerhouse/substation/depot combo for the Grand Rapids, Grand Haven & Muskegon Interurban. The building is in excelent condition and they even have one of the original interurban cars restored next to it. The building now houses the Coopersville Historical Museum.

I captured this image from Google Maps of the C.A. & E. Prince Crossing substation, northwest of Wheaton, Illinois (probably within the city limits of West Chicago). When I was still living in the area (till 2004) I understood a model railroad club was going to use it, but I don't know its current status. The former C. A. & E. Elgin line is the Prairie Path trail, and while living in Wheaton I once biked to Prince Crossing and back. The trail detours slightly around the substation at this point, which accounts for the fence barriers in the photo.
