The link below has pictures of WK&S number 65 throughout its years. There are a few pictures and descriptions showing it in Stationary Service.

Les and group, the CB&Q Mike used as a stationary boiler in the Ziel picture did not survive, nor did the replacement boiler. One needs to remember as well, Ron took the pictures in "Twilight of Steam" around 1963. It still is an inspirational book for students of steam locomotives in the USA.

The Heisler in use by the Sumpter Valley RR spent over 20 years as a stationary boiler in Idaho.

Beyer Garratt, 20th class 740 has been in use as a stationary boiler at the steam shed in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe for the past 10+ years.

Also in Zimbabwe this 19th class was in use as a stationary boiler in the first decade of the 21st century at Hwange Colliery. It has since been taken out of use and awaits scrapping.

I used to work for Maytag, once I visited the museum in Newton IA and they had a photo of two locomotives used as temporary boilers while the plant was being finished.

Unfortunately I can't recall the details or find them online.

I believe the plant was built in the 50s. The museum was in the original plant downtown. They were used at the new plant a little outside of town.

I just recalled that Commonwealth Edison had acquired or leased a Rock Island 5100 series 4-8-4 for use at their Joliet, Illinois power plant. I seem to remember the number as 5103, which I believe was one of the oil burners. Not sure why the Northern was acquired or how long CE used it at the plant. Feel fairly confident in saying that it is probably no longer there.

The two pictures I have included in this post are of the N&W locomotives at Armco Steel while they were being used as a stationary boiler. They were mentioned earlier in this thread. I have no details other than they were being used at the Coke Plant. From the looks of the one I'd say they were fired with coal plus the fact Armco had tons of coal on the property in those days. Not sure if one of these is now at Union, Illinois

"The one at Union"?

Most likely the second photo, with the guy on top of the boiler. Inside-bearing spoked trailer wheel would indicate the earlier Y-class. IRM's is Y-3 #2060.

In the Spring of 1972, Greg Brahms & I checked out a rumor of some former Southern Pacific steam locomotives being used for stationary steam at a lumber mill near Placerville, CA.

The rumor turned out to be quite true. Plainly visible when we drove up was the boiler of AC-11 4268 and under steam. The smokebox end was outside of a large shed and I photographed that end as it showed the double stacks and builders plate, Baldwin 64700.
Also visible and mounted quite high was her SP 6 chime whistle which we were able to hear.

The Compendium lists her as being scrapped in Sacramento, CA on 12-30-55, but I can tell you that would have been tender and running gear only.

Instead of 250 lbs., she was running at 150. She was fed sawdust for fuel from a Reddler conveyor and had her feedwater going through a level control valve fed by a centrifugal pump.

After a few minutes, we thought it wise to go to the office and ask permission to look around. It was happily granted by none other than the owner, Glenn Oviatt who was a bit of a fan himself.

I made a comment about how unusual it was for her to still have a builders plate on her and he replied with a laugh, "well, do you want the damn thing?" He loaned me a 12" adjustable wrench and a hammer & chisel. I had the OK to also take off the Elesco Superheater plate which I did. I gave it to Dan Ranger but kept the AC plate until I sold it to finance a trip to Brazil.

Right next to the 4-8-8-2 boiler was another smaller one off of a passenger loco. I later found out that this was off of a 4-8-2 MT class and it also was under steam.

I did take a few slides of all this and wish now that I had taken more. I believe that this operation only lasted a few more years before the mill was moved but the SP boilers did not survive.

I knew this was going to come up.

Richard, I cannot do it myself. I might ask Les if I could send him a couple and see if he'd be willing to do so. I fully understand the curiosity though.

Tom contacted me direct and I had to tell him that I don't have a scanner. Wish I did as I'd like to see the photos too.
