Volunteering to assist one of the many NJ area outfits that are moving forward is an excellent idea rather than spend any more time/energy trying to change the whole URHS morass.
The NJMT at Allaire State Park has an excellent volunteer program as does the New Hope and Ivyland RR in New Hope,Pa. Both of these programs are ongoing and active and doing good works. The NH&I program is rebuilding an interesting L&HR caboose and helping restore the Mexican 4-8-4. And, there's the K4 project at Scranton that can always use more help.
I'm sure there's others as well. As the old saying goes-better to light one candle rather than curse the darkness!!!

And Volunteering is exactly what I have done. I am very much involved with the Volunteer Railroaders Association. A group that started with helping Ross staff the 614 trips. Since we can't run mainline steam we transformed into a group dedicated to maintaining and relocating the NYS&W Hawthorne train station away from the bad corner it is on and to running motorcar (speeder) trips on the NYS&W and other regionally located railroads.

We are running two Easter Bunny trains (fundraising for the station) this year as well as several motorcar trips (fundraising for the Lehigh & New England motorcar restoration).
