This is why you approach both CSX and NS now and make them a serious offer/beg along the lines of "figure out how we can best save an SD40-2 now. We don't need one right away, but we have to see that not every last one gets mutilated beyond recognition." Ask Juniata, Roanoke, Huntington, Cumberland, et al to stay n the lookout for a potential loco for preservation rather than rebuild. You may have to settle for one minus a prime mover and generator, or one with a badly dysfunctional 645, flashed-over generator, and potentially cracked truck frames, or even a fire-damaged one, but at least it'll be a largely original start, and you won't have to rip out a 710 engine, retrofitted electronics, Positive Train Control, onboard computer terminals, pizza ovens, cappuccino machines, and whatever else gets added for Mk. VI rebuilds.........

the next three to go inside the door... In the dead line / storage line outside, was a two mile long row of EMD power, awaiting its evaluation.... The first three coming from the Seaboard Coast Line, L&N, etc etc ( B&O, C&O, CONRAIL, etc etc )
