Let's hope those side dump cars survive; it's my understanding they are true EBT, in that they were owned by the road for its own use, and may even have been purchased new.

To update this long-dead thread, long after the Mt. Union USATC cars have perished, here's a photo from earlier this week of the cut of USATC cars at Burnham, Pa., next to Kovalchick Salvage. There are five USATC cars "intact," with two car frames stacked on the frame of a third. At least one car still has remains of partial BAR lettering showing only by the chance of where the moss didn't grow atop where the lettering had been.

And because I know better, I will not entertain discussion about the three stainless passenger cars to my left, nor the Alco and Baldwin switcher hulks barely visible past the wooden cars.

Thanks for the photo. Looks like a nice steam-era steel boxcar at the left edge of the photo. Any idea as to its heritage?

The exEBT hoppers were never scrapped.

The Mt. Union yard is now the East Broad Top Connecting RR:

Standard gauge coal cars are now stored alongside narrow gauge coal cars.

I'm so very thankful I drove out to western PA and rode the train in 2011. I had a strong feeling operations would end once that lease expired. I wonder how things are coming along now, if any revenue generated by the Connecting is being put away in the piggy bank for the EBT.

^EBT and EBT Connecting are two different companies.

EBT Connecting is owned by Larry Salone.

I'm aware of that. Mr. Salone has stated on more than one occasion that he created this freight business partly to help generate income to purchase and operate the EBT in sections over time (Kovalchik wants out but no person or entity has ponied up the money to buy it from him).

Whether this comes to fruition is anyone's guess.
