There was a Y6b at the scrapper in Roanoke but the new owner up and scrapped it right off...duh, yet the other engines there survived.

The 2156 or the IRM Y3 are your best possibilities for getting a N&W 2-8-8-2 running.

We had 1218 for a while, and again I repeat you put a donation push out to restore any engine you can get results, you just need to have a skilled team behind it to back it up.

We seem to have an interest out there to run larger steam, like the C&O 1309 or the UP 4014, perhaps theres a glimmer of hope for the B&LE 643

I believe there were actually 2 Y6b's in a scrapyard in Roanoke that survived well into the 1970's before being scrapped.

Contrary to a previous posting, the N&W 2-8-8-2s (2143, 2189 & 2174) scrapped at Roanoke, VA c.1976 were owned by United Metals Co. a totally seperate company and on the other side of town from the outfit that held onto those 4-8-0s and 2-8-0 until a few years ago: Virginia Scrap Iron & Metal Co., Inc. (see "The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America" volume 2 in the "Recently Scrapped" section, page 338).
A couple of asides:
1) In 1976, the IRM Steam Dept. was in the process of preparing former N&W 2050 for its move to Union. 2050 was (and is) missing most of the centering devise mounted on the front engine unit which attached to the boiler to reduce "hunting". I called down to United Metals to see if we could buy parts off their locomotives but was told that they had "just cut them up" (hence my date for the book).
2) For a short time, Virginia Scrap Iron & Metal had four N&W 4-8-0s in their yard. No.475, now owned and operated by The Srasburg Rail Road was there from c.1962 until it was acquired by William Armagost in exchange for scrap copper wire that he salvaged from one of his coal mines (see SLDNA volume 2 page 251).
"And now we'll return to the program already in progress"...

So for those of us that are not N&W steam guys, what articulated engines remain now other than 2156 and 1218?

Y3a no. 2050 at the Illinois Railway Museum. Those three are the only surviving N&W articulateds.

I got that email as well. But I regard the source as reliable (NWHS member)

To the List: Finally ! Was informed today that "the move" will start on Saturday, May 9.
No information as to route and schedule; don't expect MOT to provide that information.
Once the gate is unlocked, it's up to NS and UP. The bad news: I will be on vacation
in Florida at the time, so no photos or video as the train departs. I will be at MOT this
Saturday for the Night Photo Event. If I receive any more info, will share with the list.

I don't think there can be an exact schedule or route, its as the tracks open up I presume, but I would hope somebody is out there watching the move the whole way.
