Very good news for this poor girl. Best wishes.

There has been serious talk of restoring the ICRR #790 at Steamtown. This would be a "right size" engine for what Steamtown does.

Just realized that the recent announcement by Nevada Northern of their plans to restore 2-8-0 number 81 to service by 2017, would add to this list. I guess I should update the thread when I get the chance.

Les, nice idea with this topic.

One more that I personally would like to see back in steam is the former Grand Canyon Ry. 18. She later saw service in OR on the Mount Hood and then out of Alamosa, CO.

Out of the 70 some locos that I have been on, I put her easily within the top 5, she was so much fun to fire and a really responsive machine.

Here's hoping she finds another home.

Tom -

Up in your neck of the woods (southeastern Wisconsin), one of the sisters of the 18 (number 21) is privately owned and supposedly there are plans to restore her to service. I never added her to this list because I never knew of any active work going on on her. The last I heard is that the owners are building a new tender for the 2-8-0. As for the 18 herself, I think she is out of service but I don't know its exact status.

SLRG 18 is serviceable. The local management doesn't want to run it.

Thanks. I thought that might be the case, but I wasn't absolutely sure.

Earl & Les, I loved that machine. Never ran her, but fired her with 13 cars and an idling diesel. A kick ass engine. She was also fairly easy to service compared to 4960.

Because of a recent update made here by Tim Reynolds on CofG #509 advising of the transfer of the locomotive to a local group for a planned restoration, here is an updated list:

Alaska Railroad #557 (ex-U.S. Army) in Anchorage, Alaska (restoration ongoing)

Black River & Western (ex-Great Western) #60 in Flemington, New Jersey (operational)

Central of Georgia #509 in Macon, Georgia (planned restoration by a local group)

Duluth & Northeastern #14 in Fillmore, California (operational)

Duluth & Northeastern #28 in Cloquet, Minnesota (restoration ongoing)

Great Western #75 in Heber City, Utah (restoration ongoing)

Mississippian (ex-SLSF) #76 in Owosso, Michigan (restoration started; status?)

Nevada Northern #81 (restoration planned by railroad)

Sierra Railroad #28 in Jamestown, California (restoration ongoing by museum)

Southern #154 in Knoxville, Tennessee (operational)

Southern #401 in Monticello, Illinois (operational)

Southern #630 in Chattanooga, Tennessee (operational)

Union Pacific #428 in Union, Illinois (restoration ongoing by museum)

If I count correctly, that makes 13. Anyone got another 2-8-0 project?

Les,

Western Maryland #734 is going down for her 1472 inspection when her boiler time expires sometime this upcoming year. I'm sure she deserves a spot on that list.

Since 734 has been running, not on the list. Once she is goes into the shop for restoration, will be very glad to add her.

Valley Railroad (Connecticut) is working on 2-8-0 #97, originally Birmingham & Southeastern #200, an Alco "Cuban Sugar" stock engine, built at Cooke 1923 and sold to B&SE 1926. It's a cousin of Everett's 2-6-0 #11.

J. David should have more info and details.

What about D&RGW 223 in Ogden, Utah? It's being restored by the Golden Spike Chapter R&LHS, as mentioned in another thread.

Howard and Philip -

Since both of these are restorations to bring the locomotives back to active service, I'll be glad to add them to the list. Thanks for the heads up!

Being advised of two recent restorations that should have been included, I'll correct the list as follows:

Alaska Railroad #557 (ex-U.S. Army) in Anchorage, Alaska (restoration ongoing)

Birmingham & Southeastern #200 (Valley #97) in Essex, CT (restoration announced)

Black River & Western (ex-Great Western) #60 in Flemington, New Jersey (operational)

Central of Georgia #509 in Macon, Georgia (planned restoration by a local group)

Denver & Rio Grande Western #223 (3' gauge) in Ogden, Utah (restoration ongoing)

Duluth & Northeastern #14 in Fillmore, California (operational)

Duluth & Northeastern #28 in Cloquet, Minnesota (restoration ongoing)

Great Western #75 in Heber City, Utah (restoration ongoing)

Mississippian (ex-SLSF) #76 in Owosso, Michigan (restoration started; status?)

Nevada Northern #81 in East Ely, Nevada (restoration planned by railroad)

Sierra Railroad #28 in Jamestown, California (restoration ongoing by museum)

Southern #154 in Knoxville, Tennessee (operational)

Southern #401 in Monticello, Illinois (operational)

Southern #630 in Chattanooga, Tennessee (operational)

Union Pacific #428 in Union, Illinois (restoration ongoing by museum)

That brings the number of Consolidations running or being worked on this decade up to 15. Other 2-8-0 project info is welcome!
