May 9 update.
Today, around 1 PM, the boiler for no 26 was placed atop the chassis. Here is a photo of the assembly 5 minutes before the boiler was rested on the other portions.

This is a huge step forward. Now back to a lot of small details. Bolting the smokebox and waist sheets to the frame before riveting. Inserting the steam delivery pipes. Adding the cab, the cab floor, the seats, the controls, the gauges to name a few. She isn't out of the woods yet, but she is oh so much closer.

Here is the video I shot when the final touchdown of the boiler on frame was made.

Have you not read the five previous pages on this thread?

Why are people so dang rude to one another on the internet?

Do you talk to your friends like that in person? "I already told you that, weren't you listening?!?" If so, do you have any friends left?

Is it really that hard to answer his question? Couldn't you simply reply "Yes it is, and if you read the thread it explains why they made that choice..." That would do the same thing, but in a much kinder fashion.

Bob -

Most people aren't like that, fortunately. But there are a few. Perhaps they don't mean to come across like that, but that's the impression they give. I agree that we probably all could be a little nicer when we reply to someone. There's enough rudeness in the world that we don't have to have it here on RyPN too.

Bob,

Anyone who knows me personally, including those on this forum, know me to be a very nice and kind person. I even surprise myself at times. I'm also very direct and to the point. People often confuse that for being rude, when in fact, I'm just trying to be as direct and honest as possible. I didn't call the poster any names, didn't flame him/her. I simply asked if they'd read the previous five pages where the green color of said locomotive was discussed ad nauseam. And yes, I do have plenty of friends left.

David,

You probably are a nice person "in real life", but you also probably don't answer your friends in the same manner you answered that question. If somebody was reading your copy of Railfan and asked "So, are they going to restore that engine?" would you reply "Did you read pages 17-22?" I'm guessing not...

However, for many folks, the internet becomes a place to be snarky, snide and show off. I guess it's because you're not having a face to face interaction.

I try and phrase my replies in the same manner I would if I was talking in person.

Also, keep in mind that if a question annoys you, there is no obligation to answer it at all. If somebody asks a question for the 14th time and it's driving you nuts, just click "next".

Bob,

You and I will just have to agree to disagree.

Remember, if poster on this forum annoys you as being "rude" you are under no obligation to respond to it at all. If it bothers you, just click "next."

Normally I do just that, but every once in a while I get the urge to ask why people feel that it's an appropriate way to treat others who share the same interest, just as something for those participating to consider. It can end up killing a good community when folks feel the group is unfriendly and doesn't welcome novice members.

I actually had the conversation in person with a fairly well known commentator in the railfan world. He admitted "I'm a jerk online, and I can't explain why!" He eventually became more sociable, but it took him a lot of work to get there.

So back at the question at hand:

Southern154,
Yes, #26 will be painted olive green. For a more indepth description, please read the previous pages.

"You probably are a nice person "in real life", but you also probably don't answer your friends in the same manner you answered that question. "

I think it's worth remembering that while our principal medium of communication is words, they transmit very little of the overall information being conveyed. Even in face-to-face communications between well acquainted people, context, posture and tone matter. The same idea is interpreted completely differently with a slight change of words. The "luv ya'" that is perfectly fine to terminate a routine conversation with your wife is completely insufficient on St. Valentine's Day or to punctuate a conversation after a disagreement, those situations require "I love you" said with the appropriate emphasis on "you".

Consider the following sentence:

They said Your father stole a red car.

Now emphasize the capitalized word(s) as you say them :

They said YOUR FATHER stole a red car
They said your father STOLE a red car
They said your father stole a red CAR
They said your father stole a RED car

Same exact words, completely different meaning. Internet communication lacks tone, context, posture, and familiarity that we have in every day life and still have misunderstandings.

My point is that all language is subject to construction, and what meaning you infer from a given set of words is far more important to their meaning than the words themselves.

I've never quite understood how people infer all kinds of insults from chatboards just because something is brief, direct and unadorned. Some days, when I'm reading these admonitions to standards of propriety that exist largely in individuals' heads, I think I'm back in the eight grade being lectured by the teachers on the subtleties of the social graces necessary to go to the first dance.

I concur with Mr. Wilkins. What he said was hardly injurious. No, he didn't say pretty please with sprinkles on it but so what?

I am reminded of a quote:

"No football is not a contact sport. Ballroom dancing is a contact sport. Football is a COLLISION Sport".

The referee just blew his pea whistle.

Interesting observation. But, let's look at it another way. There were two short replies to southern154's question:

"Have you not read the five previous pages on this thread?"

and

"Yes, #26 will be painted olive green. For a more indepth description, please read the previous pages."

If you had asked the question, which reply would you rather have received?

That is correct. For example:

"Have you not read the five previous pages on this thread?"

vs

"Yes, #26 will be painted olive green. For a more indepth description, please read the previous pages."

They both say about the same thing, but in a totally different tone. As Les so eloquently summed it up, "Which reply would you rather have received?"

Quote:

Sorry, but I don't agree. He provided NO useful information at all. He didn't bother answering the question before saying "Didn't you read this stuff?", and I highly doubt that the poster didn't already know the answer was buried someplace in five pages of chatter. So nothing useful was added to the discussion.

What was added was a negative tone of "Go away kid, we're too busy to take the time to say 'Yes' to your silly question... It's not like he had to type a big long explanation, 3 letters would have sufficed.

The tone of forum is very important to its long term survival. Members decide whether or not to participate in part based on how they feel interacting with the members. If it's a negative experience, they're more likely to stop participating.

Lol...

http://youtu.be/FyOX4G7TmE0

Both "sides" have valid points though in defense of David, it's not as if he stated (as some have here before), something akin to - "had you done a search on RYPN, you'd have found that information discussed in a separate thread from October of 2012!" I mean, really - the info was in the same thread as the question except the question was posted just two responses and the same page as the answer to his question with color pics a bit earlier.

Bob - you make a valid point, yet what if I were at this point to ask: "Will #26 be black or olive green?"

So - how about some updated pics?

Can we starting taking bets on her appearance at Steamtown's Railfest?

/Mitch
