Didn't the Germans design something along these lines ca. WWII in a V-8 configuration?

Ah, the cool German locomotive with four separate V2 steam engines on it. That thing was neat:

(The French locomotive on that page is pretty neat too.)

Here's some more details on gear driving arrangement the German locomotive:

I remember seeing something similar to the german and french machines in "twilight of world steam". Then there were the super-ugly dual smokebox-ed italian freighters. I just love how this thread has gotten info on some strange locomotive desings that could break the record. Out of these two, I'm putting the money on our assault rifle/jet engine inventing friends.

I don't know that there are any rules. This is simply a discussion with a side of April Fool's jokes.

It depends on how you define "steam traction" I guess... I certainly don't think jet engines and rockets apply. That's a whole different genre.

I think the original question related to traditional steam locomotives. Based on that, I'm thinking traditional designs, or something close to that. So a modified Heisler would work, as would something based on a PRR steam turbine.

Then again, since this is all just theoretical doodling until Ross steps up with the 614 at Pueblo, my "rules" may vary from yours.

While an April Fools joke wasn't my plan, I do like how there have been numerous different ideas that could have practical application to break Mallard's speed record. For future reference, I don't think rockets would count. The engine would need to be under steam. Using rockets would break the Black Beatle's record of 183 MPH.

Well, this is a new theory concerning Pete Best's origins and his departure from that group. Not sure what that has to do with steam running real fast, however.

I've been told CN is working with Gaz-Metro to test LPG fuel in its diesel locomotives, something that was tried and discarded before by other roads. Perhaps the economics will work now.

However, if CN is in a mood to explore alternative fuels, they might be willing to look at previously "crazy" ideas such as second generation steam.

Ross, are you there? Might be time to consider dusting off the ACE3000!
