Is ASR going to ask for donations to restore a privately-owned engine?

The locomotive is under a long term lease.

Starting Monday they will.

The lease is very favorable and has ASR's long term future in mind.

If I remember the details of this situation correctly, a bank has a substantial security interest in this locomotive. Presumably a long-term lease to an organization that will restore, keep, and possibly operate the locomotive is in the bank's best interests -- surely more so than any alternative in the Pacific Northwest.

If anyone is concerned about donating money to restore a privately-owned locomotive, they shouldn't do so. I don't think, however, they should be dissuading others from donating. The object is to preserve and restore 2100, and I think that is a positive action regardless of whether it 'benefits' the owner or his bankers in the process.

If ASR is a non-profit, it does not matter who actually owns the locomotive. If the loco is leased, it is simply an expense item as far as the leasing organization is concerned. Donate to ASR and don't worry about the ownership of its principle asset.

Here are the true facts.

1. No bank owns 2100 only one private owner. There are no leins, debts or other items from the previous situation hanging out there.

2. All donations to 2100 do not benefit the current owner. All donations go directly to 2100 per the agreement. When you make a donation it processes through the ASR system and no one else.

3. ASR is 501c3 group just like 765 and others running mainline steam. Feel free to look us up at the IRS charity search page under American Steam Railroad Preservation Association, Inc or the State of Ohio Charity search.

4. 2100 is currently on a very long term lease but the terms are very good (hint hint) for ASR to be the final owners at the end. She will not be going to anyone else anytime soon and we look forward to having her in our care for many years to come.

5. This all we can answer about the contract due to other obligations in it and clauses. Hopefully this has answered the questions at hand.

We invite all to donate to 2100 at http://www.fireup2100.org as it would be a great shame to see all of this hard work and momentum of several benefactors not to have 2100 come to life as a fully operational locomotive for all to ride behind in excursion service.

Best Regards,

American Steam Railroad Board Members

I may have missed it but will this locomotive need to have it's 15 year redone?

What is the car number transporting the 2100? Also, what's the planned route to Cleveland? Wouldn't mind getting a shot or two of it in transit.

I have a question how is the 2100 fit in the roundhouse in Cleveland? the turntable is I believe is about 80ft long and the stalls is about the same length as well. So with several stalls gone I wonder how will the 2100 fit. 2100 is about 110ft long. So will ASR put her in separately loco in one stall and tender in another that's two stalls. As I remember MRPS doesn't have many functional stalls. I'm glad that 2100 is coming back to the east I just wonder did the ASR thought this all the way through? A home for 2100 but no shelter 1352 can fit on the table and roundhouse but not 2100 that's all?

PS I've been wrong before

Separate the tender from the engine.

Yes...we are very aware of the turntable and stall size. It was very much thought through. Just like the J project items will be swapped out as needed. MRPS is working on stalls 6-10 so there will be more storage shortly.

Just got an eyewitness report, GECX 2028 ready to leave Fargo yard headed east But don't worry, it's the train behind that's going to get your attention. On a heavy duty flatcar, (sorry didn't get the number) is a Reading 4-8-4 # 2100 .

Quote:
The American Steam Railroad Preservation Association (ASR) is proud to reveal Fire Up 2100, a campaign to rehabilitate famous Reading Company steam locomotive No. 2100 to operation.

The year-long effort has seen Reading 2100 removed from a storage site in Richland, Washington and prepared for shipment 2,300 miles to Cleveland, Ohio. Contractors and volunteers will begin an involved mechanical inspection of the engine and begin the effort to rehabilitate it at the site of the Midwest Railway Preservation Society. The locomotive was removed from Richland on Thursday, April 16th after several weeks of preparation.

“Fire Up 2100 is a great example of the type of programming that the American Steam Railroad will pursue moving forward,” explained Steven Harvey, Chief Executive Officer for the organization. “2100 has a lot to teach us about not only the highs and lows of our country’s industrial revolution, but the railroad preservation industry itself.”
