I like the riveted full length patch on approximately the bottom third of the outer wrapper and the expansion foot but I am not sure what the riveted fitting is at the back mid wrapper plate.

Here are some of the answers but I desire more answers. The boiler is Argentinian and yes it could well be a Byer loco which there was some working out of B.A. It was a tender loco and burnt oil either in use or for the later work but thats all I know of its origon and use. I wish to find out more due to the next part of the story.

As it is shown in the picture it carries a Porta type chimney a Kylpor. The aditional refinments as a stationary test set up like the pipes and valves where for reaserch by Porta which lead to the draughting paper on Kylpors and Lempors, hence why it of relivence here.

So that places it as a full-size front-end test rig from the mid-70's? Very interesting!

Sadly this one picture is all that remains to show of this and was taken a good few years ago, nothing physical remains of it now!

Any way back to the main point of showing it was to show that some of the priciples including the use of boundry layers and mixing was extencivly tested and documented back then. Fundimentaly any front end that carries Porta technology must include the impingement and other theories which make Lepor etc stand out as the better forms of draughting, even if the maths of the draughting device are Porta baised then its imortant that the phisical fetures of such designs are also maintained to be in the Lempor family. In absolute terms they have been used on both the largest locomotive and the smallest (G scale) with positive results. The smallest one had conditions which where found limiting but included wire drawring of the steam and the minimum nozzle size was reached so that it was nessicary to reduce the number of nozzles to keep away from such effects.

Very interesting indeed.....but I wonder about the practical difference between a static demonstrator with a fairly constant pressure VS the wide fluctuating variations in an operating locomotive and how it is possible to compile that data and make a comparison? Maybe somebody with the math background to figure this out can chime in here......

The later work in China By Dave Wardale covered most of that and was done with a steam engine driven system so it did give the pulsating exhaust so giving that data is included in his book.

The part in Wardale's book "the Red Devil and Other Tales from the Age of Steam" regarding the exhaust testing is very interesting. IIRC, he was of the opinion that the pulsating of the exhaust flow had a big effect on the performance of the exhaust system, and so it was important to arrange the testing rig so that it had a pulsating exhaust.

With this test rig, he was able to test a lot of small variations in proportions, angles, placement, etc. of all the parts of the Lempor exhaust system with the idea of optimizing the details that were not completely covered in Porta's published work.
