Mitch,

Thanks for posting those photos. My three sons and I were riding in the caboose on the Friday train. Two rode in the cupola. I want to say, an unbeliveable treat!

I rode the Friday Aug 9 freight. Had an interesting "load" picked up from NS. A former Chessie caboose 904133 with reporting marks, TVRM 133. Google shows the caboose built in 1980. I did not realize Chessie was still buying cabooses in 1980. It went to TVRM in 2008 then to BR&W in 2009. It was pictured at Three Rivers on July 28 this year. The conductor indicated the caboose was coming to Strasburg to be painted. But no other details were available.

Question: Is the caboose a contract paint job? Or is it coming to Strasburg to provide more passenger capacity for the freights? Seems a little out of place with the steam engines. What paint?

Photos from this event seem to be as easy to catch as a favorite TV series you always miss, lol.

For those who missed last Friday's episode - it was a beautiful sunny day with a prediction of nothing but sun the night before. Naturally, there were clouds, but the odds beckoned a visit!

Friday, September 6th, 2013 at the Strasburg Rail Road -

8 AM departure - actually, got off a bit later this day missing the Amtrak Westbound.
The Eastbound caught up with us but was not very photogenic. What was most odd, was
that the corn stalks were still up and not yet cut.

Another curiosity, the caboose was dropped on the inside track while the steam engine and freight ran around on the outside track. Was wondering if this is new procedure to allow patrons easy access to the new picnic area?

Anyway - another great day at the railroad!

Enjoy the pics:

That would be Strasburg's Industrial Works Steam Crane #3.

Built in 1910 for the Pennsylvania Railroad, this Industrial Works steam crane arrived at Strasburg in 1971.

Wonder why it's still back there?

No mixed train tomorrow morning, 9/11 due to no freight coming in. Sorry for the late word.

5 PM the day before is plenty of notice - thanks much! Also noticed the Strasburg web page under "Station Updates" was updated with a similar notice.

I check it often and never had seen a cancellation so at times wondered, but it's probably pretty safe to assume there have been very few previous cancellations!

FB posts seem consistent as well and much appreciated.

In regards to the choice between the inside and outside track and where the caboose is dropped - are there any plans to switch routines and drop the caboose and /or coaches on the inside track which would allow easier access to the fenced picnic area or will the choice remain that of the engineers choosing?

Regarding the Crane - why is it still off site, if I might ask?

Mitch,

There are no plans to do anything with the crane and we need the track space in Strasburg. We took it down to LP a couple of months ago to act as a bookend.

Shame to leave it off site and out of sight - would it be worth the thought to find a spot for it at the Railroad Museum across the street? Or is that a ball of yarn we don't want to unravel?

Hi Mitch,

@Crane - she's old and in the way ...

Dropping the caboose on Track 2 next to the new picnic grove is recommended procedure so that the loads roll out the new main and not the clapped out passing siding. But when the cat's away ...
