When we were in Houston with the BNSF EAS trips, we ran over the UP (Sunset Route) on a a round trip to get to Silsbee, TX.
So you can't say "never" when talking about the UP not letting other steam run on their lines.

Let's see...non UP steam locomotives which have operated over UP tracks...

Frisco 1522

SP 4449

SP 786

GVRR 2248 ( yes that is correct )

One of the Reader engines for True Grit

There might be one or two that I'm missing...

Couldn't tell you which one, but TSRR has run one or two of their steam locomotives over the UP to get to the Palestine shops for Family Day events.

Those were the ones I was missing!!!!!

TSRR 201

TSRR 1316

TSRR 400 and 300 might have also gone but not completely sure...

You can also add the C&NW #1385 in May of 1998 when she was moved to Reedsburg, Wi. for their sesquicentennial. That did, though, require intervention of the Governor to get UP to allow the move without taking the rods down...........mld

TSR 300 also made it into Palestine.

Reader #2 for True Grit was sort of on UP tracks but never on a main line. The main line through Granger had to be kept open for both Amtrak and freight operations. Reader set up on the MofW siding, and ran the train only on the passing siding with the main line switches locked down. Even then there was a pilot engineer in the cab at all times.

From Train Magazine
Quote:
SILVIS, Ill. — Negotiations between Union Pacific and Railroading Heritage Of Midwest America took over a year to complete before the deal was inked that transferred two UP steam locomotives, including Challenger 3985, and other equipment to the preservation group.

The deal, which will see No. 3985 and 2-10-2 No. 5511 returned to steam, was announced last week [see “Railroad Heritage of Midwest America, Union Pacific agree …,” Trains News Wire, April 28, 2022].

Steve Sandberg, RRHMA president and chief operating officer, said the two organizations worked together to bring the deal to fruition, with UP seeking a way to preserve the equipment and make it available to be seen by the public. That wasn’t really an option available through the railroad’s current corporate structure, Sandberg said, so UP and its steam boss, Ed Dickens, looked to find other ways to do so.

While the equipment could have gone to other museums, one appealing part of the deal was Sandberg’s insistence that if UP ever wanted to repatriate the equipment in the future, it would have the chance to do so. “I insisted that be part of the deal,” Sandberg says. “I wanted to give UP the ability that if they wanted to get equipment back at some point in the future, they would have the ability to do so, so we wrote that into the agreement. UP would have to reimburse RRHMA for doing so, but it is an option.”

Also part of the agreement: UP will prepare and move the equipment to Silvis. With the recent postponement of Big Boy 4014’s western trip this year, the timeline has moved up, since Dickens and his UP steam team now has more time to get the equipment ready. Sandberg said the move will likely be this autumn and be well publicized, like UP’s move of Big Boy 4014 from Southern California to Cheyenne in 2014. It will move via UP to a point in Iowa for interchange with Iowa Interstate Railroad, which serves the Silvis facility.

The Silvis shop was recently cleaned, and RRHMA is working to get it ready for the equipment. “We are doing a deep clean, track work, and installing new LED lighting,” Sandberg says. Some specialized equipment needed to overhaul No. 3985 will be moved from the shop in Minneapolis to be available to the crew rebuilding 3985. That crew, like the one that rebuilt Milwaukee Road No. 261 in the early 1990s, will be made up of paid employees that can work five days a week on the rebuild. “We are currently hiring,” Sandberg says. In particular RRHMA is seeking steel fabricators, pipefitters and boilermakers. “If you have those or other steam skills and want to be part of the team, we’d like to hear from you,” he said.

Sandberg says Silvis is the perfect shop to handle steam locomotive rebuilds, since it was designed as a steam locomotive shop and has two 150-ton overhead cranes, drop tables, and inspection pits. “If you were trying to design a shop to overhaul steam locomotives, you’d incorporate the features that Silvis already has,” Sandberg says.

One of RRHMA’s goals is to establish Silvis as a warehouse for steam locomotive parts for other groups. “The idea is that we could get together and buy in bulk for things such as boiler tubes,” Sandberg says. “They could be inventoried at Silvis and shipped around the country when needed.”

While his organization is planning to open the facility for tours and open houses, Sandberg emphasizsd that the shop is not currently open. Some fans have already been stopping by, and while RRHMA appreciates the support, it is not currently set up to accommodate visitors and is discouraging the practice. Instead, RRHMA is asking for donations to support the overhaul of No. 3985 and 2-10-2 No. 5511 which can be made at the RRHMA website, 261.com, and Support RRHMA | Railroading Heritage of Midwest America.

With 3985, 5511, 6936,etc. RRHMA can see to acquire more with the size of the shop???

One thing I’d wanna see the 3985 do, would be run over the Rock Island Line. However, with CSX owning that route it seems unlikely. However, I also feel that 3985 could be run over UP rails again for a special event if they get the right requirements such as PTC

Probably my biggest foamer dream of the Silvis Shops would be a large Steamfest like what we saw in Owosso or Rock Island except with a few more steamers than before

It’d include

UP 3985
UP 5511
MILW 261
NKP 765
IAIS 6988 & 7081

& UP 4014

However, this is only just a dream as something like this would require a hell of a lot of planning and Class I cooperation

For the last steam fair/fest post above, I think the only real challenge would be to move 765. All of the others could get there fairly easily.

I was wondering if anyone has heard rumors about what else may be going to Silvis? While chasing the QJ 6988 this weekend, I spoke with some RRHMA employees about the future of the shops, which they indicating that they couldn't say too much, but there were a couple locomotives going there that have not been announced, with the end goal (short term) being around 7-8 locomotives housed there. So far, there would be the UP 5511, 3985, and 6936, as well as the two QJs (6988 and 7081). I was told 261 will stay in its own shops until it needs its 1,472.

After talking for longer, a couple RRHMA volunteers mentioned that a "slightly larger variation of a 2-10-2 could be coming very soon, but who knows." This hints towards a 2-10-4 at some point in the future to me, but I don't know which ones would be viable candidates to go there; possibly the ATSF 5000 just because it was previously considered a restoration candidate. Not to sound like a foamer, but the the relationships RRHMA has and their organizations professionalism, theoretically this opens up LOTS of opportunities now. If organizations were willing to part with them, I don't think the cab forward or a Yellowstone would be out of the question anymore. I think it's also interesting to think that within the next 5-10 years, we'll be going from having 1-2 2-10-2's operational up to five, assuming the KY Steam does go ahead with the RJC 2008 1,472 when 2716 is complete, but that's a topic for another post.

Just drove by Silvis last week while driving from Phoenix to Boston and diverting to see Rock Island Arsenal. Silvis should be a great location for the collection. I was surprised to see quite a bit of (diesel) equipment still in the yard, although a string of stored oil tankers obscured the view. The UP has long been a great friend of preservation and has, once again, outdone itself. Thanks UP! .

It occurs to me ta 2-8-8-2 is also a 'slightly larger version' of a 2-10-2...

But if you're after a 2-10-4, I'd go with a 5001 or 5011 class locomotive, if only because "more fun".

Having seen two of the preserved Santa Fe 2-10-4's, I think one under steam would rival seeing the "Big Boy" in steam. The drivers are immense, five pairs of them is mind blowing, and the sheer weight of the machine almost defies imagination. The ground most have quaked when one passed.
However, let's get a viable steam restoration program going before we create a long list of expensive-to-restore-and-difficult-to find-rails-to-run-upon steam babies. My own short-list would take decades beyond my lifetime.

There are rumors that another 2-10-4 is buried underground outside of Pittsburgh, why not exhume that and see what it can do?

B&LE 643. Not buried, bought by AOS awaiting the planets to align to get it home.

Of the 2 the J1 or the Santa Fe 5010 class run again I would rather see the 5010. Why just to see what those engines could have really done. Remember that the Santa Fe restricted the TE to 85% of true ratings and also limited the cutoff on them. They sure were good enough for the Santa Fe to use the heck out of them. Think about this for a minute. Except for some failed mallet types and some secondhand Y3's they got from the N&W in WW2 they never had articulated steam on the roster. They instead had 10 coupled engines and tons of them.
