Post subject:  Tank Cars for Preservation

Bob Yarger has encouraged me to repost this with more details in the hopes that one or more cars can be saved and preserved.

Three tank cars are available in the central Midwest area. All are single dome atmospheric pressure cars that carried petroleum products for a major refinery. One is insulated and jacketed but no asbestos used in the lagging.

Two cars belong to our Museum, and are to be disposed of. (A fourth car has been saved and totally restored). The average age of these is about 85 years or slightly more, so they represent history and are not commonly found anywhere nowadays. If no one steps forward, the inevitable will happen as the site needs to have our property vacated from the premises after many years of storage.

The third car seems to be the property of the refinery owner and is perhaps the last tangible asset of theirs on the property. They have been very receptive to rail museums in general and I have the contact name and number for a gentleman who facilitated the original saving and setting aside of these old cars. Details from previous post follow:

A homemade scale car MAY be available soon. This consists of a circa 1920 tank car with a bellyfull of concrete. Estimated total weight 100K, but this is an estimate only. The car itself is a candidate for preservation and a rare item in its own right.

The car is located in the Midwest and was created for in-plant use by the now dismantled refinery owner/operator. Unless there is some interest, this will probably be cut up for scrap. AS IS, WHERE IS.

Contact me at my e mail address if any genuine interest.
