Built by the Budd Company in 1949 for the Pennsylvania Railroad (lot 9662-033) as number 8452, a ten roomette, six double bedroom sleeper named Sturgeon Rapids. The car was originally used in joint New York to Florida service on the PRR-RF&P-SAL route. In 1970, the car found use in New York to Toronto service. Under Penn Central Ownership the car was renamed Toronto Harbour and renumbered 4335. Amtrak purchased the car in late 1974, renumbered it 2799, and retained the name. Rock Island bought the car in 1979 for use with their business cars and renumbered it 102. Chicago and North Western purchased the car in 1980 and the car was rebuilt for use as a staff sleeper with nine roomettes, six bedrooms, and one shower. It was placed in service in January of 1982 as car number 410, and was used until it was gutted by fire in January of 1985. It was sold to Milwaukee Railcar in 1985. Anyone know what became of this car? Unfortunately Milwaukee Railcar is long out of business, so I can't find out from them. Boyd bowens@rypn.org |
