D&RGW 2-8-0 looking a bit tired on its bridge display near Cimarron, Colorado. Previously displayed at Montrose, Colorado.

Sure would be neat if a 2-8-0 ran on the Durango line again. The only 2 ex-Rio Grande Consolidations running are Knotts 340 and 41 (ex-RGS) and I doubt Cedar Fair would fund an excursion to Durango. The #42 sits in the Durango roundhouse, and from what I hear it has been cosmetically restored with its straight stack (it had a dummy stack for operation at Heritage Square in the 50s). Link shows it during restoration. I also have a picture of it running at Magic Mountain. In the Durango & Silverton Guidebook there was a photo of it restored, with straight stack.

There are several photos of No. 42 in the Durango roundhouse in this RyPN editorial from 2001.

D&RGW 346 is currently at Strasburg undergoing extensive repairs and should be back home at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden.

Ed and others, on a recent trip two weeks ago to Colorado, found out that D&S is in negotiations with Knott's to bring one of the Consol's out for 2005!

Wow, that would be great. I was just foaming with that idea.

The #42 looks great, thanks to Erik for the link. However what is the 476 doing tenderless in the museum? I thought they were still running her. At least last time I heard it has the finest of the whistles of the three K-28s. I was wondering, doe anybody know who made the 5-chime whistles used on the D&S engines?

Thanks,
Ed Kelley
