Mechanics seem to be checking the motor of this LNER A4, in this unusual old photo. Perhaps a bit of fluff in the carburator..

They weren't called "cod mouths" for nothing! Beautiful nonetheless. Thank heavens the LNER didn't do to the A4s what the LMS (and BR?) did to the Coronations/Duchesses/Princess Coronations.

PS- See the crank at the bottom right? That's how you open it up.

Post subject:  LNER Hood up

I wouldn't want to be the poor bloke that had to deal with that monstrocity. Back a number of years ago, my late cousin's husband sent me two English railway books for my college graduation (he's a big fan of foreign railways). Both of them were memoirs. One of them was written by a Great Western fireman and the other was written by LNER's Chief Mechanical Engineer. Somewhere in his book, the LNER man made specific mention of how the works crews hated the smokebox design of the streamlined A4s.

Errr, wouldn't that be the "bonnet?"

I think the bonnet would be the smoke lifters, if so equipped.

Neat picture. Thanks for sharing.

I guess it's up to me to make the Lucas electrical system jab. :-)

Now, where did I put those Whitworth wrenches?
