Anyone know if paint diagrams for both the diesel and steam era of Alco production survived? I'm hoping someone here has investigated this before. Possible holder of information could be the Mohawk & Hudson NRHS Chapter, or a museum in Albany? I'd be more interested in northeastern railroads like the DL&W, LV, D&H etc. Thanks for any help.

In about 1988, we were looking for lettering diagrams for our Nickel Plate S-4 switcher. The late George Hockaday referred us to the Demp-Nock company, in Michigan. At the time, they had blueprint diagrams for lettering NKP Alco diesels. They required that we buy some of their stencilling materials (about $100, if memory serves), but they sent a complete set of the blueprints. They appeared to be for NKP RS-11s, but they adapted quite well to the S-4.

My impression was that they had been a contractor to Alco for many of their railroad customers, for this sort of thing.

An internet search appears to indicate that they are still in business.

The Demp Nock company seems to have prepared die-cut, adhesive stencils for other railroads. I have seen "Santa Fe" passenger car letterboard lettering stencils marked for Demp Nock. These dated from the 1960s.
