Post subject: | Asbestos question |
Where are all the places asbestos was used on steam locomotives? I know about the layer between the boiler shell and jacket, but was it also used in the wrapping around steam pipes in the cab? And was it used in other places?
Thanks
Alan
adofmsu@aol.com |

Alan:
All that cloth wrapping on steam pipes in the cab is generally asbestos. Don't forget the cylinder jackets also. A lot of gaskets and packing materials also contained asbestos. There may be other materials, such as mastics or coatings, which contain some asbestos on some locomotives.
Good Steaming,
Hugh Odom The Ultimate Steam Page whodom@awod.com |
