 Post subject: Builder's Plate Convention
PostPosted: Mon Jun 28, 2004 11:08 pm

I am enclosing a link to the builder's plate convention that Jerry J. Jacobson has put together for September 10-12, 2004. We welcome all steam and diesel plate collectors. We do want to limit diesel plates to early first generation cast plates. If you have any further questions, please contact myself or John B. Corns at the Ohio Central. This has never been attempted before and it has been a dream of JJJ for many years.

Ron,

Thanks for posting the info about the convention.

I don't wish to marr the reputation of true collectors, most of which have legally obtained their plates, but..., has anyone created a list of stolen engine plates?

The posting of the convention reminded me that, IIRC, in the spring of last year, someone had posted information about a break-in at Scranton, Pa, in which a few plates were either removed from engines or displays. The posting was on the last version of Railroad.net, and I have not heard if any leads were followed or pieces recovered.

So back to the question, does anyone have a central file of missing plates, with unit numbers, build numbers, identifiable markings, material, etc...? Something like this would be nice, for peeople that go to and/or host train shows and builder plate conventions, to have a list of what to look for, and who to contact to get the originality confirmed.

Just my 2 cents,

Rich

Rich, I would be very pleased if someone could post of list of known stolen plates from legitimate sources. We all know about the plates from Strasburg that were taken. I also know that many plates disappeared "out the back door" at the Edaville Museum over the years. I have been shown some of those plates. I also purchased some at Edaville when they had their auction in 1991. Today's thieves give all collectors a bad name. I had also heard that some plates were stolen from the B&O Museum over the years. The disappearance of hardware items from operating or in museum locomotives is deplorable. Maybe it is a sign of our society today, but that is a topic for another day.
