Ohio Central Steam Shop

It has been posted and I do confirm the fact that LS&I No 33 will be at Train Festival 2004. In order to have the locomotive at Train Festival, the Ohio Central Steam Shop will work the following schedule.

Volunteers are needed for all shifts. The ground rules are as such if you plan on volunteering time on the project for any shift.

I still have a few paid jobs open for the next thirty days only! Call for more info.

Before I post the schedule, may I say that we had a wonderful turnout last weekend and if we can keep the momentum, we will be well ahead of our completion date of July 26, 2004. If you look at things the way I do, we have 60 days as of today to complete the project. I figure one day is eight hours, if we work 16-18 hours we can count each day as two days worth of work completed. As we get closer to the middle of July, I anticipate a few three shift days to complete the project.

The ground rules are:

If you plan on working with us, you MUST call my office and leave me a message on my voice mail. Please do not ask for me as I am not taking many calls.

When leaving the message, state the following; Your name, what day you are coming and the shift you plan on working and what time you called and also a phone number that you can be reached at after hours.

I WILL ONLY CALL YOU BACK IF I DO NOT WANT YOU TO COME! IF YOU GET NO CALL FROM ME, KNOW THAT I PLAN ON HAVING YOU THERE AS YOU SPECIFIED IN YOUR MESSAGE.

The schedule for the week of June 28-July 3rd is as follows:

Monday, First shift 7:00-3:30 John E. Rimmasch Formean
Monday Second Shift 2:00-10:00 Jason M Johnson Foreman
Tuesday First Shift 7:00-3:30 John E. Rimmasch Foreman
Tuesday Second Shift 2:00-10:00 John E. Rimmasch Foreman
Wednesday First shift only, Long day 7:00-7:30 John E. Rimmasch Foreman
Thursday First Shift 7:00-3:30 John E. Rimmasch Foreman
Thursday Second Shift 2:00-10:00 John E. Rimmasch Foreman
Friday First shift 7:00-3:30 John E. Rimmasch Foreman
Friday Second Shift 2:00-10:00 Jason M Johnson Foreman
Saturday One Long Shift 7:00-7:00 John E. Rimmasch Foreman

Sunday July 4, Pending

Please call 740-622-8118 ask for extension 106 or JohnÂ’s Phone to leave a message. We will provide food and a lot of fun. We need all of the help we can get.

Volunteer work is fun and educational. Notice the posts from other OC steam junkies about how much fun we have. See you this week!

This is an opportunity that, while not maybe once in a lifetime, sure doesn't come around often. If you can help, PLEASE do so. As Ryan so eloquently put below, some of us drive better than 6 hours down to get there, and there is a reason --- heck, there are a lot of reasons.

Ryan mentioned most of them, but to me its the knowledge of working on something bigger than yourself; the ability to be part of a team of people working towards a common goal that you not only believe in, but are GLAD to invest a part of yourself in. Just wish I had more time to give, as do each one of us who volunteer there I think.

And thank you Jason, John, Jerry, Scott, and everyone else down there for allowing us access to an amazing "living history" environment. Now, if I could only convince my boss that volunteering down there for 30 days straight qualifies as an educational sabatical......

SURGEON GENERALS WARNING: The Morgan Run Shops are addictive and contain chemicals known in the state of California to cause dumb grins so huge they hurt. Nothing could have prepared me for what a tremendous experience volunteering for the Ohio Central has been. From day one, the guys there have treated me like long lost kin. In the month I have been going, I have cleaned an ashpan, run an alemite gun, and tapped staybolt holes. I have been awakened at 6am to the whine of a turbo generator, and helped ready a PAIR of mainline engines for the day. I've worked on spring rigging, helped tram an engine, and done a myriad other tasks I had always read about but never in my wildest dreams ever expected to do. Its like walking into an O. Winston Link picture. Even though its a four hour drive for me, its worth it. I've enjoyed it so much I took the month of July off so I could work on the 33. I cannot describe the experience. It is a dream come true. Go now. You WON'T be sorry.

Nice meeting you Chris along with Greg U and some of the other young gun volunteers. Wish I was a bit younger and more able-bodied so I could join in from time to time! Jason is right...this is a young persons game. Keep the fires buring!

Greg-

I disagree. It may be a young-persons game in some respects, but you will find a pretty amazing mixture of ages in that shop, from your retirees, and middle age guys, to us late 20's and early 30's guys to even some late teens.

The thing the older guys have and bring to the table is the knowledge --- how it comes apart correctly and goes together CORRECTLY, what NOT to do as well as what to do (mostly learned through experience), and how to direct those of us who are but neophytes. They are EVERY bit as important as those of us with the strong back and weak minds, even if they are sometimes the strong minds and weak backs ;-).
