The famous Pacific for which a whole RR club is named. Looking pretty sad at Waterville, Maine.

Someone needs to get that engine out of the town! Or write the town saying that the locomotive should be getting more attention. I stoped by last fall and the inside of the cab looks Terrible, most of the floor is rusting away same with the tender.

I have been putting a proposal and suggested guideline together for placement before the Waterville, Maine Mayor and City Counsel. It points out needed essential repairs and suggests a standing protective housing. My only fear is that when presented with such a proposal, the City COunsel will elect to do the worst rather than invest in this heavily damaged monument to steam. That is not a burden I could suffer too easily. How says the group? Should I attempt a meeting with the Mayor or just dispose of the proposal? Nothing ventured, nothing gained, but there are always consequences to any action. The repairs to the CB&Q Hudson are a good model of action.
I'd like to hear what all of you have to say about this idea.

Do It! How can such a important piece of Maine history go down the tubes. I would be willing to volunteer some time to help the condition of the locomotive.

Its obvious the town dose not care about the engine. I'm sure they would sell it for all they care. I would love to see the engine be moved to a new location or museum where a proper cosmetic resteration could take place, and possable a resteration to operating condition (That may be wishful thinking, but you never know). A place like the Belfast & Moosehead Lake in Unity may be a good home for it or the Rockland Branch (corse it may be a little to big)

You might point out to the city mothers and fathers the example of Hartford, VT which has organized and done wonders with B&M 494. As I write, a shelter is under construction thanks to aggressive grant writing and energy by Tad Nunez, director of Parks and Rec for the town.

Mr Grueck,

Things are not as bad as they appear, a shelterr for the engine has been designed and now they are looking for money to built it.

The down side of this is that there some townspeople who do not want to see anything block their precious views of something.

Talk to them by all means, but it ain't going to be easy. The NRHS and others have been at this for years.

You might look for discussion here on RYPN in the past. Plenty of it.

I have cited Victoria, Texas, placeing their Mikado into museum hands. Yours is another excellent suggestion. Anyone have good pictures of this placement or others that would serve as a model for Waterville?

Ted: I am aware of much of the discussion regarding the 470 in this group, but thathasn't yet had the effect required. I'd like to know more about your information regarding the designed shelter. What is your source of information and where are these plans held at this time? Have you had direct contact with the City of Waterville, and if so, when? I have posted an inquiry on the "470 Club's" website discussion list, and though viewed, nobody has responded. Your information is positive, and that is what we need, but I need some solid references.
Incidently, I honestly believe that the barrage of emails and phone calls that inundated the community in South Dakota, the one that was going to bury the Pacific, had a major impact in reversing that decision. Let me make the proposal to the City, then I'll let everyone in here know the status and where to write. Together, we all can save the 470 from certain destruction.

A good place for the 470 is at the Coles Land Transportation Museum in Bangor, ME. That's where Bangor & Aroostook BL-2 554 is displayed.
