Story of an Air National Guard unit removing the lagging off Soo Line 4-6-2 735 at Minot, ND. This is the one that local idiots wanted to bury. I'd like to know more and see photos of this. Do most states have a Guard unit with asbestos certification?

It's good to see more good news on this board especially having looked at the picture of 470 below. I E-mailed the mayor as I'm sure others did as well. I'm sure that these messages helped buy the engine the necessary time.

One of the "train enthusiasts" also happened to be the man with the asbestos certification, so the plan fell in place rather easily, if I understand it correctly. I had a little corresponcnce with these folks; pointed them toward J. David Conrad's classic work on preserving park locomotives, and apparently they heeded the advice to cut the jacketing, rather than the pipes and studs, to gain access to the lagging. Unfortunately, when I poured cold water on their dreams to "get her steamed up and running" I think I became persona non grata, but I could probably find an e-mail address for the man who coordinated the asbestos removal effort if someone wants to contact him. Having a little more contact with the mainstream railway preservation community wouldn't be a bad thing for them.
