OK, I couldn't let it go. I wanted to see if I could get the auto login working and still be able to bypass the index page. I figured out a way to do it but I'm too tired and I keep screwing up the php code (of which I know next to nothing). But, I have discoved some nice features on the index page which make me think it's actually worth keeping. For example, it gives you a link to all the posts made since your last visit. The equivalent of this on WeBBBs is the "NEW" flag, except that you have to scroll down and find them all. PHPBB lists them all for you in a single place. Consequently, I am rethinking bypassing the index page. Will have to think about it. I could maybe move the "list new posts" feature on to the Interchange forum page but that's a lot of work. Regardless, with the index page reinstated, the login works as it should, and the auto login works too. If you use the auto login feature DON'T log off when you leave the forum, just close the window, and next time you visit you won't have to log in again. New Interchange hkading@rypn.org |

If you are going to keep the index page, I would suggest that you could archive into different forums, i.e. by year or perhaps by year and quarter. That way if a searcher has an idea how long ago a particular discussion occured, they don't need to run a serach against the whole database. As the forum ages (grows), the amount of CPU resorces for a full data base search might become prohibitive not to mention taking several hours. By dividing it up into chuncks, you can side step the issue. Ed ff1044@aol.com |

Hume, this new format looks exactly like the New, New New York Central Forum I used to love. Many were driven away by the new format. It was difficult to learn, but I understand it now. Using the auto login (on the other forum) it would still tell me that I was a "visitor" but if I tried to post something, I was suddenly logged on.
