I'm looking for the all-time number of Maine Central RR steam locomotives. Those that were purchased by the MEC from other companies can be included in the total. I've been assisting Richard Glueck on a comprehensive proposal which will be presented to the City of Waterville, ME regarding the future of MEC #470. This particular statistic seems elusive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ![]() SJHussar@aol.com |

If you have access to a copy, Kalmbach's "Guide To North American Steam Locomotives" by George Drury would list all MEC steamers acquired after 1900. Unfortunately, the volume doesn't cover anything from the 1800s, but it's a place to start. mckay1995@comcast.net |

I took a look at the September 1978 issue of Railfan Magazine which has an article about MEC Steam, which also had a roster, If it is all correct I don't know, but from that I counted 144 locomotives. However in the Steamtown book Steam over Scranton, its look a Maine Central Steam and the 519 it says something like 200 locomotives in the 1910-1920 era. An online version of the Steamtown Book can be seen at there website. I'll keep looking around. -Justin Franz qcmrs18@yahoo.com |

As a related item, I am trying to find out what type of locomotive my Maine Central number plate came from. It is a round plate and cast around the rim is - Maine Central RR - 1884. It is number 3, but I can tell that the 3 was added at a later date. The face was machined down and a new 3 applied. The plate used to be on display at the Edaville Museum and I purchased the plate from one of the trustees at a later date. Any information would be most appreciated. http://www.ocsteam.com/bptrain.html steamfan@crusoe.net |

I have a small book titled: "MAINE CENTRAL STEAM LOCOMOTIVES A ROSTER OF MOTIVE POWER FROM 1923 TO THE END OF THE STEAM ERA" By Edwin B. Robertson Also check with the 470 Club. I know someone will have a roster. Good luck! tchjjjj@aol.com |
