Looks like this former USATC 2-8-2 is getting asbestos removed and perhaps some cosmetic work in Skagway, Alaska.

That was done a couple of years ago - asbestos lagging removed but no cosmetic restoration.

Do you think that this engine could be returned to service in the future? I believe it is a sister to the Dollywood engine and the Tweetsie engine. Am I right?

How close is this engine to Skaggsway?

I went to college with a guy who worked summers on the WP&Y steam operations. This was in the mid '70's. Which locomotive(s) were operational at that time? Are any of those currently operational, such as the ones mentioned (Dollywood and Tweetsie)?

Yes, if the WP&YR considered it a priority. It's missing parts but they could hual 196 out of the river and between the two could make one operable loco. Also the Tweetsie shop has the production drawings and the capability of making parts.

Correct. 190 is at Tweetsie and 192 is at DW

By the 70s most of the steam was retired. Engines which were on site then and operating today are:

80 [20] and 81 [19] at SVRy, 19 operating 20 being restored
70, 192 operating? at Dollywood, 71,72 inop? at DW
190 operating at Tweetsie
73 operating on WP&YR
69 presently under restoration to return to WP&Y

The steam power soon after retirement, August 22, 1963.

Hey Mike,
Thanks for this update on #195 and the previous one on the "test" board.
Do you think there is any chance that they would salvage any more equipment from the river? It sounds like the stuff has survived pretty well, if someone is already working on restoring one (In a previous post Mike reported this in response to a question I posed about the 2 engines already pulled from the river, in the late '80s).

Thank you for responding to my questions. I rode in the cab of the 190 at Dollywood some years ago. It rode pretty good. I offered to shovel awhile but was turned down. They did let me ring the bell. I had a good time.

There is always that possibility. Tracks are upgraded to Carcross [MP67.5]. #69 is being rebuilt for service on the hill. If the cruise ships continue to provide a good source of revenue, then there is interest in the company to add more steam. They are adding more coaches to the line, and more steam may be the next priority. They have a number of engines available for restoration.

I got to fire the 190 about 20 years ago. She steams beautifully. Shake the shovel at her and she pops off.

Make that the 192 and it was Silver Dollar City at the time. The senior moments are comming with greater frequency.

I see from the White Pass website that the shovel-nosed locos in your picture are still in service, as are the ones shown below (I believe these were built by MLW?). What are the histories behind these units - builders, number built, years in service, how many rebuilds (if any), etc. Thanks in advance for any info.
