Getting down to valve setting on GOAT and wondering about appropriate lead. FYI, GOAT is a 1913 Alco / Rogers 165 PSI saturated, slide valve, Stephenson geared 0-4-0ST.
I figured about 1/16" for a default, but welcome any advice on what is working on other operating teakettles out there. Never set a little tanker like this one before.
Dave
I dusted off the 1920 "Modern Locomotive Valves and Gears" by Charles McShane and he says anywhere from 3/32" to 1/16" full gear lead was standard practice on a Stephenson slide valve engine at that time. Have fun and don't pinch your finger.
Ken
