The much much travelled 4472 at York. She didn't carry the ears in during LNER service, right?

Thanks for the photo link Josh...

Did anyone read about the Railfest in York, UK? There were something like 22 engines under steam of all different gauges! It looks as if it was a terrific event. One of the interesting side notes was rather a bummer. 4472 was scheduled to steam through a banner to kick off the event, however she had a boiler problem (I think) and had to be pushed through the banner by a class 47 diesel.

There is a good article in "Steam Railway" magazine about the event. I can give more details if anyone wants them.

No problem Alan. Where do you but Steam Railway? I know they have them and other UK magazines in Canada but I don't get up there too often.

No, 4472 did not have the ears in LNER times, nor the double chimney (reasion for the ears in the first place). She had a rather nasty leek in some of her small tubes just before railfest and there is a photo taken inside her firebox of the water gushing out in this months steam railway magazine which I got last Thursday. Those of you with difeculty seeing what went on go to my photo site where there are photo of railfair, and other things steam related.

*To clarify, she had the smoke deflectors installed late in her British Railways days, the late 1950s and early 1960s. She was retired in 1963 with those deflectors.

A souvenir of operating the North Wales Coast Line, perchance? >;-) (Anyone who doesn't get the joke, ask Wayne or one of the other Anglo/Celtophiles here......)

So what persuaded Bressingham to finally give up Cromwell after all these years?

Lovely photo, and jogged a memory. As a youngster I photographed that engine with my father's Kodak (not as wide a lens) in what appears to be the same location in 1961 or 2. Engine # was 60103 at the time I think.

Ten years later it was in Alabama, 90 miles from me and I missed it.

Thanks for the link Owen. Some of the bigger shots weren't working. Was GWR 3440 "City of Truro" under steam? Pretty neat to see "Prince" there, is "Livingston Thompson" still at NRM? When I was at NRM he was inside near a wall, so probably too far away for the two to "talk."

JAC,

Here's the link to answer your question. The NRM has been working with other groups on projects, and with the Green Arrow ready for second retirement in this decade, The Cromwell will have a specific role.

I have to get over there to see the City of Truro!

Joshua,

A friend of mine from the UK brings me copies when he visits. At one point I did subscribe. It was about $90 a year including air mail. Since having kids I have found other uses for the $90!

Anyone reading this board would find this magazine very interesting! It is available at newstands here and there. You may be able to email the publisher to see if someone close to you stocks it.

Regards,

My cat is less expensive than children, so I subscribe to Steam Railway. It is a truly outstanding mag, and unlike most US rail mags, also focuses on world steam operations.

Unfortunatly on the day of my visit Truo was not under steam due to some remedial work being required on the tube plate before an excursion to Scarbourgh the following weekend. She dose steam well however and can be seen to do so in the Misc gallery of my site. Liviston Thompson is still at York but will joining us back at Porthmadog next year for out 50 years in preservation annerversary before returning to the NRM late in 2005.

I don't know what has happened to some photos I will have to check it out.

It would be amazing to see all the double farlies lined up together in one spot; the Earl, Livingtson Thompson, Merddin Emrys, and David Lloyd George. My grandfather volunteered on the FR often- I will have to seriously consider making a trip to Wales next year.

Thanks Owen.

Nice to see this loco being restored. When I was stationed in England by the Air Force in 1968 - 70 I visited Bressingham and had a cab ride in her for nearly 400 yards! The track available was very limited. It cost a half crown extra, or two shillings and six pence, or 25 pence in today's currency. Another loco ride available was in a completely open standard gauge 0-4-0 well tank loco. It had no cab, just a railing around the rear deck. Great fun for this Yank.
