Mr. Levin, while I fully understand your "reciprocal consideration" point, by adhering to that stance you are cutting out a lot of people who would love to see your train and its great PRR power. Not everyone who would like to see it is able to either ride or chase it and send you photos. Here in the Crestline/Galion area there are hundreds of folks with PRR connections going back many decades. It is hard to go anywhere around here without meeting someone else whose brother, father, uncle, etc. worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. I had hoped to be able to tell area media the approximate time that a real PRR train would be coming through on Aug. 2nd, on its way back East, so that many of these relatives of PRR employees in Marion, Bucyrus, Crestline, Mansfield, Loudonville, etc. could go down to the track and see the Pennsy coming through once again. But , if you give info on the train's schedule to only the people you mentioned, that will not be possible. I would urge you to inform the media of the train's projected schedule, both coming to Dennison and going back, so that many more people can see and appreciate what you are doing to keep alive the memory of the "Standard Railroad of the World". I have given the CRESTLINE ADVOCATE which publishes on Wednesday most of the details.

For those of your "Pennsyfiles" in Ohio we expect to leave Columbus at 7 AM. We are allowing 1 hour in the schedule to get out of Columbus allowing for terminal congestion and a round-a-bout routing. It is about 60 miles to Bucryus at about 30MPH and then we turn east.

So it is easy to figure out but allow for a more expedited timing through Columbus.

We hope you all enjoy the trip.

Our policy in the Pennsylvania region is an outgrowth of some pretty poor and downright dangerous behavior from some "ugly railfans" who have created a situation that lawyers would an attactive nusance. We felt that we had to try to control the public release of the schedule to avoid some pretty bad train chasing drivers as well as some pretty blatent trespassers on RR property especially after the trips to Clearfield. So we have adopted a more restrictive policy to releasing that information. One incident by one of the "uglies", and we can forget about anyone experiencing the "might and the glory". I hope you understand and we hope the people in Ohio exhibit better habits than their counterparts in Pennsylvania.

Thank you, Bennett. I did not realize that the "ugliness" which has marred some steam trips had extended to runs with your E-8's. Simce you have given info to the Crestline paper, would you prefer, then, that other papers in the area not be notified? I had thought of clueing in the Marion, Bucyrus and Mansfield papers ( which are all really the same one ) and the Galion paper, but will not do so if you think it would cause potential problems. I hate to see our train-watching - and our world in general - come to this, but have about given up on seeing any change for the better in my lifetime. Arrogance and ugliness seem to have become the order of the day. Well, enough of that. Hope you give the C-line roundhouse a big salute on the chimes when you roar through. Lots of Pennsy folk labored long and hard there to keep "Lines West" in business, and I like to think that their spirits still inhabit the place today. May you have vertical amber signals the whole way. Jim

No problem with the legitimate media so the locals can see the show. Please try to keep it of internet "rags" like TO which seem to attract the fringe element like flies to cow manure. BTW. we will be stopping at 9AM in West Lafayette on Saturday to lay a wreath at the memorial to the 33 members of the Pennsylvania National Guard who were killed in the wreck on 9/11/50.

We hope all the folks in Ohio enjoy our passing.

For those who might ask, Passenger Extra 5444 West was a troop train from Wilkes-Barre PA with PA Army National Guard troops called up for the Korean War and was enroute to Camp Atterbury IN with Engs. 5444 (K4s), 5526 (T1) and 20 cars. X5444W was stopped account broken air hose when No. 31 with engs. 5774A and 5776A (BLW BP20 diesels) failed to stop at a stop-and-proceed signal and struck X5444W in the rear at 48 MPH. The 33 killed were all on the troop train.

The RR and Eng. 5774 were equipped with cab signals but I do not believe they had the speed control function in 1950.

Electric City Trolley Museum Association
