Report on Trainorders.com (premium members only) says that the CVSR has acquired a former NWS&W RDC for operation. Anyone have further details? Isn't this the only RDC the NYS&W owns? On a side note, is it possible that the changes wrought by the CSX/NS takeover of CR have made the NYS&W in effect a "has-been", no longer of a size and scope to really justify its "toys"?

I suspect this is the M-3, which was owned by the Corydon Scenic Line in southern Indiana. I understand that is has been for sale since the tourist operation shut down last year.

The NYS&W bought 4 RDC's new in 1950 (M1-M4). All of them still exist in varying states of disrepair. In the early 1990's the NYS&W acquired 4 RDC's of NYC and NH heritage from Metro-North to operate the On-Track shuttle service in Syracuse, NY. They were numbered M5-M8. I believe only two of these are in operating condition.

From what I have seen as a non-member, the Trainorders news section functions more or less like the RYPN flimsies. I found the article link by searching Google News for 'Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad'

Scenic railroad rolls out new car

80-passenger rail vehicle is self-propelled, adds flexibility to tourist line

PENINSULA - The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad on Tuesday unveiled a self-propelled rail car that is the latest addition to the excursion train.

The 80-passenger car, known as the M-3, doesn't need an engine to pull it. It has its own diesel engine aboard the 90-foot-long car, which was once used to transport East Coast commuters. It can be run by a crew of two.

The all-purpose Rail Diesel Car adds flexibility to the tourist rail line, which runs from Independence through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to Akron and Canton, said railroad president Douglas Cooper.

``This new car will add an exciting dimension to the service we can provide to our customers,'' he said. ``It will change our business for the better.''

The M-3 means the railroad can better accommodate small groups such as school and private charters and won't have to run more costly diesel engines when the M-3 can provide the service instead.

``Frankly, it makes us a little more nimble,'' Cooper said.

It cost about $45,000 to acquire the stainless-steel car earlier this year from an excursion railroad in southern Indiana, he said, and there were some additional expenses for fixing it up.

Helping to pay for the new car were the Alton F. and Carrie S. Dairs Fund, the Farnham Family Charitable Trust, the GAR Foundation, the Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway and the National Machine Co., Cooper said.

The car -- refurbished with new upholstery, overhead racks, carpeted bulkheads, a sound system and heating and air conditioning -- originally was used for commuter service between New York and New Jersey.

It was built by the Budd Company in 1950 for the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad and was rebuilt in the 1980s for commuting passengers by New Jersey Transit.

Such railroad cars were last used in Northeast Ohio in the 1950s when the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad operated them out of Cleveland, according to the Cuyahoga Valley railroad.

The railroad now has about 40 pieces of equipment, including 10 diesel engines and 20 coaches and auxiliary equipment, Cooper said.

One of the biggest pluses to the new car is that it has bigger windows than other passenger cars.

``It's got great windows,'' he said.

The car is the M-3, which is the number she has on the CVSR, We purchased the car last fall and spent the winter rehabing the car,it a great running car that we hope to get lots of use out of.
