Last class-one standard gauge steam locomotive to run in revenue service in the US, in 1962. Looks like it gets occasional paint, but little else, here at Leadville, Colorado. Though there is just an ordinary tourist RR there now, the old Colorado & Southern facilities at Leadville are fairly complete, and have good potential to become an authentic 1940s historic site with a little vision and money. http://emdexport.railfan.net/frame_layout.html ryarger@rypn.org |

We were just there in August of last year and yes, the facilities are quite nostalgic; we rode their tourist train out to the end of the line and back, the motive power is a former GN GP-7/9 and you can also sign up (and pay a bit extra) for either a cab ride or a caboose ride (I chose the cab ride). Beautiful scenery, too bad the line is disconnected... You can stand on the station platform and just imagine the scene depicted in so many photos of the 'last train from Leadville' in 1937. Colorado is just full of railroad history..... I was amazed on this steam engine though that it is still basically intact and looks like you could just lube it, fuel it, light the fire and off ya go. Number 641 is owned by the City of Leadville. At the time of LC&S's inception, discussions were held between the City and the operator about restoring it to operation. I don't recall whether the present structure was built before or after the narrow-gauge era; in any case it's a little-known relation to the more famous Como roundhouse. From a marketing standpoint, the historic site idea would face competition from the Royal Gorge tourist operation down the valley a ways.. well for that matter LC&S has to deal with that even now.
