I was trying to find a picture of the Vulcan Iron Works 0-4-0ST that is buried in a culm pile at the old Wanamie Minesite in Wanamie, PA. It is a three-foot gauge engine that had been partially stripped.
I have heard that it may have scrapped. Does anyone know anything more about it? It is also my understanding that the government is preventing anyone from trying to recover it.
-James Hefner Surviving World Steam Locomotives james1@pernet.net |

After I posted my message, I found the following picture on the net. Is this the one that is buried in the culm pile?
The picture was posted at http://www.coalregion.com/GuestbookArch ... h0498.html. The person who posted it was Jack Edwards of Houston, TX. He mentions that he took it in Shanado, not at Wanamie, in May, 1970.
-James Hefner Surviving World Steam Locomotives ![]() james1@pernet.net |

Jim,
Can you read the number? I can check which two Allaire ended up with. It is quite reasonable to think one of those two traveled to NJ via "Shendo" as the locals call the village of Shenandoah, PA.
It is my recollection that the engine in the culm bank never left the mine.
Now you've got me all fired up on this.
I just moved, so let me do a little library digging. I have some great Wanamie info given to me by some folks trying to save the Huber Colliery in Ashley, PA.
My library is still in transit. I miss it.
Rob
Inlinebob@aol.com |
