UP stone building

Shortline enginehouse (I think it is called the Nebraska Central) at Grand Island, Nebraska. This stone building is probably the oldest building remaining from the transcontinental railroad and likely built not long after its completion. Anyone know more about its uses over the years by UP? Probably a machine shop originally?

The Grand Island roundhouse was torn down in the early 1960s, but somehow this ancient building remains in place today.

It was part of the carshop for many decades. A lot of freight cars were built there. Later, freight cars were converted into maintenance of way cars of all kinds there, and finally, it was a shop for maintaining and overhauling track machines.
