I must ask though why painting the number on the smokebox door was thought to be a good idea? It destroys what otherwise is a very presentable display. I was part of a small delegation that recently inspected it - a local friend also involved in steam put together a rough estimate for cosmetic restoration and preservation. No idea if anything will come of it. Sanford was an interesting place for railroading 50 years ago, but a lot has been lost since - the A&W facility (which included a turntable) is now an overgrown lot next to a creek. Romatic Manufacturing is still there, near the prison, Edwards has not moved back home. Sanford is not far from Bonsal, home of the New Hope Valley RR, which might be a fine place for her if she were to run anywhere in the vicinity, although I'm not aware of any plan or proposal for such. It just seems like an obvious fit given an experienced steam crew and operating tourist / museum railroad so close by. dave |

Kelly, The extensions you ask about on the steam chests are knurled on top and used as a step to get onto the running boards, but I know that can't be the whole answer as to what they are. I can't imagine adding that extention to a casting only to use as a step. |

It almost looks like the pipes for a super heater should mount there, but it doesn't have a super heater. There is a bolt that holds the top of it to the steam chest so it could possibly be some sort of service port for the slide valve. |

Looks like standard outside admission Walschaert gear with ports for valve setting in the sides of the valve chests - I wonder of some snifting gear of some sort is in the circular thingies? Must be something in one of my old books somewhere........ BTW, piston valves. I'm wondering if she was superheated than converted to soak by the A&W? Odd configuration of hardware, and shortlines were very colorful about shop floor alterations. Wish I had taken more time to poke around. Dave |

Just looked at the photos on a bigger monitor and it looks like INSIDE admission! Will somebody who knows the difference with a high quality monitor please check it out? dave |

You'll pardon the six-year delay in responding to this. <:-) I have seen at least a couple photos of such number painting in my day--oddly, such painting was standard on Belgian steam locomotives, and they used long number series like Germany and France did! I seem to recall a vintage photo of such a number painting buried away in my stuff on Carolina railroads, so it's not completely out of the question that such an "ugly" number isn't a completely accurate restoration..... provided, of course, that the photos I'm looking for aren't of this loco after desecration.... |
