Post subject: Mr. Levin's E's how much changed through years?
PostPosted: Wed Aug 04, 2004 1:42 pm

Just curious, over the years, as the E-units were transferred from Pennsy to susequent owners, how much of the original "innards" remain?

I was once told that the UP's E-9's have more in common mechanically with an SD-40 than an 1950's E, just wondering how the E-8's were kept running through the years.

I sure wish circumstances would've allowed me to watch em polish the main somewhere, preferably Ohio

UP's executive E-9s were rebuilt in 1993 with single 16-645 prime movers and GP38-ish electrical cabinets. They are indeed kind of an SD40 or GP 40 under the hood.

I believe Bennett and Eric's ex-CR locomotives still have the twin 12-567 prime movers, though they may now have 645 power assemblies.

I'm sure Bennett or Eric will correct me if I'm wrong and explain more once they get back.

A very minor point, but they think they are GP-38's under the hood. I was told that they wanted to go with the Roots blown sound, rather than the turbocharged sound, thus the GP-38 vs GP-40 comparison. In their present configuration, parts and "Dash-2" knowhow are available everywhere on the system.
