Hot and steaming, I suspect at Valle de Mexico, 1960s.

In the very near future, ex-NdeM #3028 will be operational.

She is under restoration at the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad.

Could you post some more current photos. It looks like it is going to get a new tube sheet judging from the photo. Is a new firebox in it's future as well?

I know that most of us would like to know a few more details.

Thanks in advance,

Why?

I'm not disparaging the quality of the New Hope shops in any way, but it doesn't appear to me that the NH&I would be very conducive to operation of even a smallish 4-8-4.

The thought of that loco regularly squealing around the curve onto the "Perils of Pauline trestle" almost scares me. Or maybe my memory of the curve is off. Please correct as appropriate.

My RyPN colleague makes a very good point. And, it is one of the issues my TVRM colleagues -- who have a ton more civil/mechanical engineering skill that I -- constantly consider when evaluating a restoration candidate's economics. For coaches, it has to do with seating capacity and the units ability to pay for itself plus add something to the bottom line.

For a steam locomotive, there is always the basic question, "If we fix it, where do we run it?" Is it heavy enough to haul enough people on our routes to pay for itself, plus add something to the bottom line? (Geesh, how many times have we heard that important refrain from R.M. Soule!) These are tough calculations, and their answers have a lot to do with long-established and well confirmed data.

It is one reason why some of us with business orientations might call some restoration plans a bit thin when, for example, some group talks about restoring a light 2-6-0 or 2-8-0 to operation. We have been listening to the engineers (civil and mechanical) we know.

When did they start working on this engine? Any word on where it'll run when it's done if/when it gets done? Are they working on it steadily or is it just a nothing to do so let's work on her project? I'm not very far away and would love to volunteer some time.

They've been "working" on it since 1994!

I have the same concerns. The #40 squeals on some curves. She has a much shorter wheel base and a one set of drivers is blind. Speaking of that does the #3038 have flanges on all drivers?

All the above being said I would still love to see NH&I get her steaming as I'm sure everyone else would.

Have a good weekend everyone!

From what I understood, there was talk of operating the 3028 on "off line" excursions rather than in daily serivce...that being over SEPTA trackage. It's not out of the question, as I know that they have been forming a "working" realationship with SEPTA with the NH&I operations out of Warminster as an example as well as operation of some freinght over SEPTA trackage. However, this is not and never has been confirmed, but that was the talk.

614 made it over the line with no major problems, so I can see the 3028 operating over the line with some ease....although they would need to upgrade some of the trakcage for daily operations of it...especially the water laden clay areas south of Reeder Road that have been giving the railroad trouble for years.

Side note: I don't recall the 40 having a blind set of drivers....at least not the last time I looked?

Bob started this thread off with a very nice night photo of NdeM 4-8-4 #3038, but it quickly shifted to sister engine #3028 currently undergoing restoration. I would like to get it at least a bit back on line by asking this simple question; Is #3038 one of the NdeM 4-8-4's that is still in existance and if so, where? Thanks!
