I was down that way for the last two weeks (NRHS Railcamp/Railfanning) and stoped by there where we saw it in the shop. Instead the 90 and 475 where out, not a bad replacement and I had not seen the 475 before. They are as rare as hen's teeth. I have one of her taken on the CNR in 1959 (with a different tender) and another taken by Mike Eagleson in the early 60s prior to sale to Steamtown. The first photo I used as a guide when designing 89's present CNR rectangular number plate. The major cosmetic difference between CNR 89 and Strasburg 89 is the replica stack (replacing the old tapered shotgun stack, done in the 1990s), no whistle "shroud" and no CNR style raised rectangular number mount on the rear of the tender. Regardless, 89 in her present form looks downright superb!! Also, a little-known fact: for the record, the current whistle on 89 is actually 90's Great Western whistle, which sounds almost right-on like 89's CNR whistle. K.R. Nothing actually operating - I have seen shots in the Montreal dead line (where, as Kurt mentions, it sat with a different tender, though who knows if it was actually connected). The tender it arrived with in Vermont is definitely not the one in the pictures. And there was an incredible variety of tender types used on this class. Victor Hand mentioned he actually saw 89 in service (I want to say it was on a branch in the Belleville-Trenton-Wellington area) when his family vacationed there - no pictures, though. Lots of roster shots by Otto Perry of the class on photoswest.org. JAC |
