Recently on the return of one of the trips with the Curtiss Lumber Co. #2 I was contemplating the water used by the steam engine and calculated a water usage of one quart of water per second. Before I get into the math there are a couple assumptions to be laid out. The first assumption assumes all water is consumed in transit. I realize this is not true as we sit for nearly one-half hour in Rockaway Beach, OR before returning to Garibaldi, therefore steam is still being used by the air pump, dynamo, and a small back leak through the fireman's injector. The second assumption is really an approximation of water used from the water tank. We don't have the exact level in the tank marked, so we've estimated about two hundred gallons remains after two round trips. With a 2000 gallon capacity that leaves 1800 gallons used or 900 gallons per trip. Now for the hard part, The math. As stated the estimated water usage per trip is 900 gallons. One round trip is 10 miles, or 90 gallons per mile. We travel at an average speed of 10 miles per hour, six minutes to the mile. Six minutes per mile works out to 15 gallons per minute. Fifteen gallons per minute is equal to one gallon every 4 seconds or one quart per second. I realize that this is not exact, but I think it is interresting to look at a one quart container and realize how much water is being used. The Curtiss Lumber Co. #2 is a 60 ton oil buring 2-truck Heisler built in 1910. She is currently being leased to the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad for short tourist runs three times a day between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, Oregon on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer. shay2305@oregoncoast.com |

Interesting information. What is the TE or cylinder size? What is the corresponding fuel used for the same trip? Is it burning BunkerC or a different grade of oil? mike211@yknet.ca |
