The link below has pictures of her as built as well as her condition before she sank.

One of the members of the museum that is interested in raising her main engine and pumps belongs to my "Steam Lizards" group. I was able to tell him how large the engines were thanks the book "The Boats We Rode" that was sent to me by Ted Miles. They are now raising the money they need to raise her and remove the machinery.

Re-reading his message, the museum has already taken ownership of the ferry, and they should be raising her to retrieve the machinery in a few weeks.

There is what looks line another derelict ferry, north of the Elizabeth, on the Philly side of the river. I saw it a few weeks ago from the Aquarium in Camden. It looks like another railroad ferry; anyone know anything about it?

And although it isn't a railroad ferry, I get pretty depressed every time I drive up the NJ Turnpike and see the Staten Island boat Mary Murray in the mud of the Raritan River. I've been in that engineroom, under steam, and hate to think of what it looks like now. Happy memories-

I believe what you are referring to the Sardinia, ex-Philadelphia. In a picture I have of her on my "Surviving World Steamship" CD-ROM; she is white with oval windows and a brown stripe on the side. I know it was built in 1926; but nothing else about it. Perhaps someone can educate both of us.

I had these two confused in the first two years of my project; but I am also certain I have them straight now.

According to an article in the Philadelphia Daily News, August 6th edition, that ferry is owned by a "gentleman" formerly of Ridley Park, Deleware County Pa, that sits in prison. He apparently purchased the boat with drug money, and opened it as a Night Club/Resturaunt. The ferry was in good condition after its abandonement when the owner went to prison and sat unused until a group of people or kids used it one New Years Eve and desrtoyed the interior which was rather nicely decorated.

This ferry sits only a few blocks from the Elizabeth, near the Acorn Metal Works, not far from Columbus Blvd.(Deleware Ave)and Spring Garden St.

It is for sale and a bit of irony is that the pier it is located at is owned by Michael Asbell, who was part owner of the Club 34/Club Heat/Moshulu Resturaunt which drew national attention when the club slid into the river after the pier that the it sat on collapsed on May 18, 2000. (pier since rebuilt with a large condo on it) He can't get rid of the boat because he doesn't own it and he can't do anything with the pier until it is removed, so it too sits with the same uncertain fate as the Elizabeth.
