There has been a very lengthy, ongoing discussion on the NGDF board about the demise of the present operatorÂ’s tenure on the Georgetown Loop Railroad at the end of this season, after 30 years of blood, sweat, and toil to build and operate one of the finest, first-class historical railroad operations in the country. ItÂ’s one of the saddest stories in the realm of railway preservation that one could ever imagine, and whatÂ’s so mind-boggling is that itÂ’s all being engineered by the Colorado Historical Society - an agency that should be in the preservation business! C&S #9 is only part of the saga, and all the more a disgrace for the CHS that has long-neglected its care and preservation and is now claiming it will be restored to operation so they can run it on the GLRR. Much of the present rolling stock, including all of the operating steam locomotives, belongs to the present operator, who will remove it from the premises as the present season comes to a close. The story is a long one, and promises to go down as one of ColoradoÂ’s most scandalous failings in the realm of historical preservation. |
