Post subject:  The Pullman Project

Gentlemen,

My previous message about the work being done by the modelling fraternity reminded me that I should mention Tom Madden's Pullman Project here. Mr. Madden has been funding the microfilming of the Pullman Co. records held by the Newberry Library in Chicago, and then transcribing the data from Pullman's Car Construction Records and shopping cards to a database that now contains more than 9,000 records. This database is available for free at the link below.

Using the database allows one to follow a car back through its various rebuildings, equipment modifications, and paint schemes. All entries are dated, unless the shopping records lacked a date. Paint and lettering schemes are specified by their Pullman Co. drawing number, and these drawings still exist, I believe, either at the Newberry or at the Illinois Railway Museum Pullman Library.

In all, this is the most extensive collection of easily searchable information on the Pullman Co. car fleet ever assembled. It should be a worthwhile resource for any one restoring a Pullman car. Indeed, the link below should be added to this site's Links page so it is available to all interested in the preservation of Pullman cars.
