Does anyone have a source for the outer cover and lens assembly for a classification light for an SD45? Our E-L unit is being repainted and this one missing part could really be used on the rear end of the loco to make it visually complete. Any and all leads would be appreciated.

Is this unit being repainted as E-L or Conrail? If it is being repainted as E-L, will the cab-signal equipment added by Conrail be removed?

The E-L unit did not have any cab signal equipment.

The Photo below shows the unit after its 1997 re-paint at the NMOT. The Box on the engineer's side contains cab signal equipment installed by Conrail.

This link shows the unit as it appeared in EL service:

From this photo, the paint does not seem bad - could it be renewed with an automotive wax?

If the unit is to be repainted, I think restoring it as a Conrail unit would make sense, since the unit may have operated into St. Louis with Conrail, this paint scheme reflects the unit's current mechanical configuration, and it may be an easier paint scheme to maintain over the long term.

We are repainting the unit in the E-L colors but are not removing the box.

The unit was previously painted over the winter of 1996-1997 with an experimental (to us) silicon alkyd paint that chalked almost immediately and resisted waxing. We've done a quick prepping and are now recoating it with Sherwin Williams' high-solids polyurethane, a paint with which we've had very good luck in the instances where we've not been able to afford Imron but still wanted good coverage, gloss, and durability.

Are you talking about the two lights (one on eaceh front flank near the top) that are located in the nose of a typical EMD diesel? Such as the likes of which the ATSF and others were removing and plating over during the late 80's and early 90's? If so, I have a pair of them you can have, send me an address and I'll send them to you.
