Wow... that's quite a collection. If someone could arrange that Lehigh Valley car to be dropped off in my yard, I'd appreciate it. Looks a little rusty, but what the heck.

Is $8500 for a car 10-years OOS with no rstoration the going rate these days?

I don't think this is the going rate. This is not the first time this guy has tried to sell them on ebay. If I remember right there were 11 of them then too.

I wonder if this is from the batch that sat at Sayre, PA for years, along with a bunch of CR diesels as I recall. Seemed to go on forever --- that Trains Magazine article a few years back (1990-ish) had a picture of them either there or someplace else in PA. As I recall the mag detailed where to find cabeese, and said the going price then (sans trucking) was between $3500 and $5000, depending on the railroad or broker. I think getting a caboose is strictly a private or broker deal now though.

Anybody got a Pere Marquette or GTW caboose they have an itch to get rid of? ;-) I finally have an area to put one!

I think they were the hacks out Renovo, there was a car rebuilder up there.The companys name escapes me at the moment. As for the price its a little high. Plus you would have it trucked from your nearest team track. That could run you a few hundred to thousands for the low boys and crane. You would also have to prep your back yard with rail, ties and ballast. The big bucks is the low boy and crane though. Its a shame no more people went for the hacks they were giving away in Reading Pa a few years ago, most went for free and Conrail would ship it to the nearest siding to you place. With these ebay hacks at least over 10 grand or more.By the way Rob D. I got dibbs on the Valley hack

An exchange occurs when a willing buyer is fleeced by a willing seller...or something like that. ;-)

Seriously, the "going rate" down here in the South is around $4,500. There are a number of cabeese available, particularly around BHM, MOB, JAN, and MSY. Hot weather south of the Mason-Dixon Line and cost to effectively A/C has something to do with the depressed prices here in Dixie. While there are no reports of anyone ever baking to death in a lakeside caboose, I do know of one instance wherein the owners scrapped an ex-L&N car located on Smith Lake due to cooling problems.

Up Nawth, one of my Canadian colleagues told me her SO paid $8000 USD for a caboose for use as a snowmobile waypoint shelter near Lake Muskoka. Seems they are easier to heat than cool. The car worked very effectively in that service last winter.

Yes, this is definitely the remnants of the Renovo fleet. I've seen at least two of the pictured cabooses in local service in central Pa.

The real point to consider is that presumably whatever is left is the leftovers from a fleet that at one pont numbered 90-100. If they've been passed up for all these years (I think we're talking 10-12 years), just how bad shape are they in?

Are there any really significant cars in this group - i.e. - the unmodified survivors of a class or group, small subsidiaries, etc. Many New York Central subsidaries retained seperate corporate structures and had specially lettered rolling stock. Likewise, the Penn Central purchased a small numbers of waycars from other railroads.

Hi Rob, Reading Tech has an LV porthole, 95116. The cabooses that are at the Tamaqua station, I believe are ex-NH, but they were modified with little bay windows, something that seemed to happen to a majority of New Haven cabooses.

Yeah, here we go again! These were originally in Renovo, were trucked a few miles east to Jersey Shore. I was told that these were part of a grandiose plan for a motel/hunting lodge in the Jersey Shore area, but the "idea man" seems to have run out of money (probably by paying too much for the cars and the trucking). I believe you could have had any one of these for about $5K when they were in Renovo. I understand that those who fronted the money for the "venture" are the ones selling these cabooses. There was an article in the Allentown Morning Call recently about a retired school principal in Bucks County who bought a Lehigh Valley hack and had it placed in his back yard. They got the figures screwed up, but it came from this group. He paid a pretty penny for the whole project, according to the article.

Just out of curiosity, anybody know of any ACL hacks available? I've been thinking about acquiring a caboose of my own (not that I can afford one, but it's something to save for), and since SCRM doesn't have an ACL car in its collection I'd kind of like to get one of them.

Class N5G porthole-end caboose, LV 95106 is privately owned and stored here in Ringoes at the BR&W. The owner began a complete restoration but no longer has the time to work on it. He grumbles often about just cutting it up, though I know he wouldn't do it... I really wish I could help him out, but I just have no time with the other 4 million jobs I have to do here.

If there is anyone interested in helping out, maybe a team preservation effort can be undertaken? Lemme know and I will bring this up with the owner.

We also have one of those white LV boxcars that I would love to see cosmeticly restored to original appearance (it mostly is in orginal paint, just restenciled).

These cars came from Renova, PA in 1995. The going price was $4500 ea, but with 20 cars purchased a deal must of been worked out. The 20 cars left Renova in 2 groups of 10 and went to Titusville, PA for what was planned as a motel, that never happened and the cars sat on a siding on the Oil Creek & Titusville (tourist line). So these cars doubled in price for sitting for 9 years with no work done on them. These cars have also been listed in TRAINS's classified section for the past 5 or so months going at $8500, and its seems that 9 cars have been sold, now they are working on the other 11. When the cars moved by rail to Titusville they all had OVHX recording marks and numbers.
