The above car at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union is one of the cars sold to MOW water service and is currently displayed painted gray and numbered IC 100641. Some minor changes were done by the Illinois Central when they put this to use. It is in very good condition and 'could' be available for sale/trade. It operated in our freight train last year. Whatcha got?

There is a milk car at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum in Versailles, KY. It was obtained from the GM&O which had used it as a MOW car. May have been GPEX but is too well painted over to be sure.

I am not sure the heritage or the maker, but there is a Milk car as well as a 6 domed tank car that sits I believe in the area of New Brittan/Chalfont Pa. They are on private property with rail access. You can see these cars on the left as you pass by on the R-5 Regional Rail SEPTA train heading to Doylestown.

If the car in Versailles is the one I think it is, it is currently (or very recently) painted in grey primer. Is that correct?

If so, it is a 50' GPEX car. I do not have any info on the number.

Rob,

How about the H.P. Hood box cars that contain stainless steel tanks for milk?

I think the Illinois Railway Museum has one, along with the better known Bordon car.

The Western Railway Museum has one on hold for another museum. Going there tomorrow if you want a number.

These are the cars that are listed as GPEX on the list. There are three that were restored by General American in the 70;s for museums (Rio Vista, St. Luois and IRM) while many others went into MOW service - most on the L&N and GM&O. Those cars are starting to pop-up in museums. There are at least 7 in total.

I'm not so sure this car belongs on the list. If you'll follow the link below, you'll find that the car was built as a mail car, spent eleven years just after WWI in milk service (likely as a baggage car hauling milk in cans) then was rebuilt again as a baggage - mail car (M&E Car on the Soo) for use as a trailer to EMC motor car M-1. Convereted to work service during WWII, I'm not sure that anything from its milk car days survives.

That's an excellent point, Dennis. Not all the cars on the list are "milk tanks" but I am trying to include dedicated can service cars. To that end, there are probably many additions to the list, including a few interubans that I have yet to add.

I guess I should come up with a list of qualifers as to what gets a car on the list. For now, I'll say I want to list everything once lettered for milk service or any car that operated for a *known* quanitity of time in dedicated milk service -- this could include some REA, PRR, NYC and other express cars that were used in can service.

Rob,

I believe that the car in Versailles KY has a glass lined water tank. I was told a few years ago that the car may be used as a canteen behind a steam locomotive. I read somewhere that the Museum has gotten rid of both steam engines. #63 went to Ohio to a rail trail. I am uncertain who purchased 0-6-0T #717. The car is an ex GM&0.

Yes, the steel GPEX cars have two stainless tanks in them. Even though they look like boxcars, they are really tank cars. GM&O and L&N used some as water cars after GPEX sold them off when the milk business dried up.

IRM uses one of thiers as a canteen for the 2-10-0.

This car appears to be GPEX 1015. Early research suggested that it was used on the Boston & Maine Railroad under lease by H. P. Hood & Sons Dairy in Boston. Subsequently, it was used by L&N/CSX as water car L&N 40605. It was donated to SRM in 1993 via the New Georgia Railroad.
